Had a bad moment musically speaking the other day.
« on: June 21, 2006, 06:19:58 PM »
I was talking to a guy about buying some tires when he mentioned in passing that they had a store in Wentsville Mo. So in a jokeing way I asked if he had ever sold anything to Chuck Berry.

Dull Silence.

Ok I thought its possible someone never does not know Chuck Berry is from Wentsville. Heck George Thurogood made a record about it. So I said Chuck Berry is from Wentsville.

Still dull silence. Then about 40 seconds later he says oh ya he is that musician thats in jazz and blues.

Meanwhile Im still thinking HE NEVER HEARD OF Chuck Berry.

How can any american not even know about Chuck Berry?  Jeeezzzzz  Is it him or me ???????????

Okay, similar yet even more unbelievable story.  There are two brothers on the music scene here in Alpena.  They are known as the Douglas brothers.  Lloyd and Chris.  They are some of the best musicians you ever heard.  Lloyd is best knwn for his guitar and Chris for his Bass.  Both, however, can play just about anything and do so spectacularly.  Lloyd has sessioned in Nashville and Chris has toured with bands all around the country.  Anyway, with all that in mind, Joey Spina, the young man whose CD we have just about finished, is at open mic at the 10th Avenue.  He plays Billie Jean, by Michael Jackson, one of the top selling songs of all time.  This song is also off of the top selling album of all time.  People get up and dance.  People sing along.  The song ends and Joeys session at the mic ends.  The band takes a break.

Lloyd comes up to me, in his most sincere, charming, country boy way and says to me, "Boy Charlie, I really liked playing that song of Joey's."

I say, "Which song?" knowing that Joey only played covers that night.

Lloyd says, "You know, the one everyone danced to" and he starts playing the lick from Billie Jean.

After I surreptitiously retrieved my jaw from the floor, I quietly leaned in to Lloyd and said, "Joey didn't write that one."

He looks at me, clearly surprised, and says, "Who wrote it?"

I said, "Michael Jackson."

He said, "Oh.  I never heard it before."

On a somewhat related note, I did my Ed Sullivan impersonation at the office the other day - got lots of puzzled looks. The other old guy though it was pretty spot-on...

That IS hard to believe!   :o :D
