Where is this article from?
« on: December 22, 2009, 10:04:12 PM »
Hello to all forum members, I need your help with identifying a magazine issue from 1950's that contains the article attached below,

the quality of the attached images is terrible, but you can still see the title and authors name (Cliff Prodger) "Autonews Editor" I didn't find any "Autonews" magazines but I did find "Automotive News", is that the same magazine? The article is for sale on eBay, but I really want a complete magazine. The article was probably published in 1952-53 time frame, that's when most of the articles were written on this car, http://russiancars.lefora.com/2009/07/30/stanley-slotkins-pobeda-article-archive/

if anybody knows which issue had this article please let me know, any other info will also help, someone from another forum suggested that this is probably not from an automotive publication which could also be possible

I really do hope so, it took me almost two years to find the car, hopefully it doesn't take that long for the article to surface. I've already went through every automotive publication that is archived, it's not there. Access to everything else is impossible unless you have the physical copies of the mags.

Welcome aboard, Max.

A quick search of Google Books reveals Cliff wrote for The Bulb Horn, a newsletter for Veteran Car Club of America members, and for Car Life. He's also mentioned as an editor of the South Pasadena Review, and may have frequented Pacific Rocket Society events.

it seems like he wrote for a couple of different publications, google books actually blocked me one day, turns out they have a limit of searches you can do per hour, Car Life is not fully archived there either, keywords from text of the article would come up if they were there

The link you included seems to incle articles cribbed from this site:

http://gaz20.spb.ru/download_magazine.htm

The author of that page cites a very long list of sources. Perhaps an e-mail to the author of that web page would be a good starting point. Did you e-mail the selller on eBay, to find out what magazine it came from?

Otherwise, sit tight, and wait for one of our Russian car experts (I am not one) to chime in.

I submitted a few scans myself to the gaz20spb site, but the article I'm looking for is not there, I didn't ask the seller on ebay because I want a complete magazine, by him telling me the issue where it came from would automatically discourage me from buying his pages, the article is part of an expensive lot, it seems like there's no clues on the origin on the pages themselves, so it would be very disappointing if I bought the lot and not get the info I need

another reason for not asking the seller is fear of a price change, I'm not going to mention names, but I bought literature from him before and when I showed interest in a particular lot or item, the listing would automatically be re-listed at a higher price, and I yes I did fall for it cause I really wanted it :D :(

I have to look up my archives, but many years ago someone sent me a scan of a Pobieda ad in an American magazine from the early 1950s.

And though you're in California, I'd suggest arranging a few days' long visit to the The Benson Ford Research Center at the Henry Ford Museum. I've seen a _lot_ of early 1950s magazines there, which may yield a result.

thanks pnegyesi the article would be in an issue from July 1952 to the end 1953, that's when the rest of them were written on this car, but I could be wrong. So far these are the articles I know of on the Pobeda http://russiancars.lefora.com/2009/07/30/stanley-slotkins-pobeda-article-archive/    and here     http://russiancars.lefora.com/2009/09/10/more-articles-on-the-gaz-m20/

unfortunately as a 22 year old college student I can't afford a trip to the Ford Research Center, but I wish I could get my hands on their archives

I live not far from Dearborn. If you don't need the information ASAP, I can probably make a trip over there.

In the interim, as you are a College student, I'd suggest a Lexis/Nexis search, which is surely available via your college's library.

thanks!!! Otto Puzzell, there's absolutely no rush on this, the car was a publicity magnet at one time and has lots of history behind it, I got the car,,, and now I want the memorabilia :)

I'm almost sure Lexis/Nexis would not have automotive publications archived but I'll try, I tried them and other college scholarly sources before, when I was looking for the car itself,

I've had some luck with them in the past. A previous employer had an account. They've got a lot of content.

Another good source locally (in SE Michigan) is the National Automotive History Collection, at the Detroit Public Library's Gratiot Avenue branch. May be worth your reaching out to them. If they have anything on hand, I can make a run down there to make copies, if they allow that.

as a student I get free access to Lexis/Nexis, so I'll definitely try, I did not know about National Automotive History Collection in Detroit, I'll contact them too, no need for copies if you do come across something, name month and year of the magazine issue is all I need, there's lots of back issues on ebay to buy

thanks again

puzzle solved! found the magazine issue that had this article, the folks at AACA library tracked it down. Turns out "Autonews" magazine was only published for a year in 1950's which explains why it is so rare. The magazine later became "Western Automotive Journal" and Cliff Prodger was the editor there. Still trying to find an original copy for my collection.
