Subies Rule!
« on: January 11, 2007, 08:26:05 AM »
Ten inches of powder out where I live this a.m.; no plows this early and the Subie (the Audi is still at herr Doktor's awaiting a Euro infusion) w/ all-season radials flew through it, headlight-high drifts and all!  For a minute here and there, felt like a rally driver (well, you gotta dream sometimes)....

It's well into January, and not a flake to be seen here in the shadow of the most powerful city in the world. Which is probably for the best, since a light dusting will shut this place down. We've got transplanted southerners who clean out the local stores if it drops below 50, transplanted northerners who suddenly find urgent needs to drive as soon as the white stuff falls, and SUV-emboldened locals who relish the ~ thrice yearly chance to justify AWD and a high center of gravity.

Me, I'm just happy not having anything to shovel...though I must admit the snows+steelies currently mounted on the MR2 looks EVEN MORE stupid when it's 60 degrees out.  :-\

If you recall my post from last February about a run home from NYC on a day when the snow in Central Park was measured at 27" and most of the SUV's on 95 were going about 20 mph and blasting along in the wife's WRX at 60mph, you will also remember that these cars are absolute demons in the snow.  We actually made it home in only 20 mins more than a regular run on dry roads!   :o

Hosannah!

I got the chance to drive through a pretty serious snowstorm in Eastern Colorado last week. Even with Michelin all-seasons, I had no trouble slogging through the white stuff. The Impreza isn't all that hard to spin in the snow, but it's damn easy to recover. With a good set of snows on the wheels, this thing would be a demon.

I've sure been impressed with the sure footedness of my Audi allroad quattro, I had to make an emergency run to the plant about 2 am one morning when the guy plowing my lot accidently backed his spreader thru one of the windows; with the wind blowing straight out of the northwest it was rapidly filling the office with about 3 ft of snow. With the adjustable height suspension, I just raised her up a notch and rolled on out; 2 ft of snow on the ground and blowing like crazy and the plows were nowhwere to be seen! I also really appreciated the HID headlights that night!
