You know you want to build an all-wheel-drive hot rod.

You know you need this:

Skyline GT-R AWD transmission

You can get gearsets that will handle 1000+ HP. It's at least 7 inches shorter than a freight train and weighs several pounds less. You can use spare sewer pipe to fab your new center tunnel. Where else you gonna get a smooth-shifting 5 speed manual + AWD transfer case with massive aftermarket support? Some truck? Hardly sporting.

 :)

Wow, Stephen M, that transmission above is JUST what I need for my top secret AWD Dodge Dart GT-R project car. In, fact, I'm going on E-bay right now to purc....OOOOH! SHINY THING!

Pretty Shiny Sparkly Chome-y Hayabusa Swing Arm THINGY!

You know you need this. You cagers wouldn't understand, but when you lay your crotch rocket down at 120 MPH, you need sparkly bits than can be seen from space. Helps the EMTs find where to hose off the asphalt.

What I like best about it is the absolute lack of steering linkage.

May I suggest something like this as your project?

Former show car apparently parked in the weeds?

Swing arm suspension front AND rear?

Military surplus powertrain?

Number of wheels ~= 4?

So apparently I have a thing for interesting, bargain mechanical bits suited for yet-to-be-defined project cars. You, however, have a thing for this:

Audi S4 V8 & 6-speed transmission

Eight cylinders and six speeds seldom make for a boring car.

Counter examples welcome :D

I'd buy that Audi V8 + tranny, but hanging the entire engine forward of the front axle is something only a crazed  Audi-phile (or subaru fan) would do. Instead, a more technically sound approach would be to set the engine further back and use a prop shaft to send power forward to.......OOH! SHINY THING!

Ok so as far as counter examples there are a few Mercs and such with V8s and 6spd slushboxes.

Those Audi motors while being hopelessly placed in a fwd car make a nice layout for a mid engined machine. Say take this Puma and rip out the VW engine thing and toss in that Audi motor. Now that I've done all the hard design work for you all you need to do is add a pile of cash and hours of skilled fabrication, tuning, etc. Simple!

I'd buy that Bug Camper, but I can fit everything I need in the back of an NA Miata. Instead, why not help keep the peace with this:

Police Issue Fiero with V8 Swap

Sadly, it appears the V8 conversion was accomplished entirely without the use of angle iron.

I'd  jump on that Fiero, but I already have two convictions for impersonating an officer, and my home state has one of those "three strikes and you're out" laws.

Instead, why not pay $120k for a possibly legal street car almost comparable to a $35k evo?

As is I'm afraid no sale - now if it been converted to a pickup truck with a bed fabricated from angle iron then it would be a different story.

Alas this also has no angle iron but how about a Fairthorpe Electron?

I prefer a classy false convertible top, WITH OPERA LIGHTS, to a stick-on sunroof.

I also like to inherit unfinished project kit cars built on salvage title donors, like so:

Countach kit car based on MR2 chassis

Stephen M personally vouches for soundness of underlying mechanicals (184k on my MR2T) ?

Car photographed on cardboard and plastic to:
A) Keep the car from getting the driveway dirty
B) Hint at recent $50 driveway paint job.

Have at it!

here is an odd one. Studebaker Champion on a 4x4 Dodge D50 chassis, engine and dash! You can see the front wheel doesn't quite line up right. The Dash looks out of place. There was a Austin A40 with Dodge Colt (rwd kind) drivetrain and dash for sale recently - I wonder if they shared a common builder.

The same page lists a Pacer, a Gremlin, and a VW Bug with a seized engine. Clearly the Studebaker-Dodge one-off is the pick of the litter...box. :)

I must admit I'm a bit disappointed by the lack of autopuzzles purchases resulting from this thread. There's a lot of high quality automotive flotsam and jetsam here, people. Open those checkbooks. Give 'till it hurts. Operators are standing by.

And, as a special incentive, the next buyer of any one of the fine pieces of autmobilia featured in this thread may opt to receive, at absolutely full cost to them, their choice of either one of the following two service vehicles:

1941 Ford Flathead V8 Fire Truck, or....

Low mileage 4x4 turbo diesel ambulance

Tote bag not included. Call now.

drop top Taurus anyone - with low profile paint, wing and rims. Just the car to pull a bank job in. all the extra money might come in handy for fixing the epic body flex.

The custom paint looks really detailed and really well done.

'tis a shame about the canvas, though.  ;D
