Not really, but seems to be an Italian body on a VW chassis.

VW? Yes, certainly, but Italian body...?

The picture was taken in Italy (Reschensee, Lago di Resia) and the license plate looked Italian to me, with an upright oval containing the I for Italy next to it. But the Italian body is just a guess after all.

The Reschensee/Lago di Resia is very close to the Austrian border, so the car could easily have come from either Italy or Austria. I wouldn't have thought four people would go long-distance touring in a car like this, but you never know.

I have seen this photo on a forum where someone has identified it as a Fiat 600 Jolly by Ghia, but it very obviously isn't one of those. Apart from anything else, according to Getty Images the photo was taken in August 1953. The wheels certainly look like VW, and the proportions are about right. It's an odd-looking thing - not much in the way of style about it. It almost looks like a military scout car, but I can't place it at all. The back seats seem to be higher up than the front ones, but I don't know if that's significant. I can't see why there would be any reason for that in a VW floorpan.

The photo was taken at the Reschensee or Lago di Resia in northern Italy, close to the Austrian border. The car looks to be Volkswagen-based, but I don't think anybody got any further with it.
