New York Auto Show 1966 (?)- Pictures request
« on: July 09, 2013, 12:26:49 AM »
Hi All,

The gentleman I work for is a huge DeTomaso fan and has a number of prototypes (Mangusta Spyder, Fantuzzi Sport 1000, Ghia Sport 2000) as well as a production Mangusta. He has just purchased one of the Fissore alloy-bodied Vallelungas. In speaking with one of the previous owners today, we are led to believe this car was the New York Auto Show car in what we believe was 1966. It apparently also spent about a year immediately thereafter in the Museum of Modern Art. We would love pictures, if anyone has any, of this car in period as we want this car to be as correct as humanly possible. It is currently disassembled and has been partially restored. While we complete the restoration and assembly we want to make as much correct as possible. I know some of you have books beyond books. Hopefully someone has some photos they can share...

Thanks!
Dale

According to the first attached scan of a MOMA program, the Vallelunga displayed in 1966 was by Ghia, which picked up the building of the cars after Fissore built the first three. So if his car was built by Fissore, it wasn't the example at the museum.

However, MOMA also states that the car was "never before shown in the US" (second scan, below). But the NY Auto show was in April, and the MOMA show began in September. Maybe MOMA was better at knowing art than build details.

Thank you for that. I found that document as well in the MOMA press release archives that are accessible online. Interesting that it is listed as built by Ghia. One might surmise since DeTomaso bought Ghia (Does anyone know the date this happened?) and they were building the "production" car, they wanted to promote it as built by Ghia when it may well have been built by Fissore.

We are now hearing this same car may have been in the 1966 Geneva Motor Show. We would love to see any photos anyone might have of either the NY Auto Show or the Geneva Motor Show from that year.

Thanks!
