It's being billed as Detroit's largest gathering of stars and cars.Saturday night, at a newly constructed pavilion near the General Motors Renaissance Center, a stream of A-listers will strut down a red carpet for an invitation-only party that's drawing automotive bigwigs and tastemakers from across the globe.
It's all part of the GM Style event, where celebs in designer duds will walk or drive 17 new General Motors vehicles, concept cars and historic designs down a specially constructed runway.
But on to the name-dropping:
Jennifer Hudson , the former "American Idol" contestant who is earning Oscar buzz over her performance in the movie "Dreamgirls," will be here. As will actor Christian Slater .
Cheryl Hines , the Emmy-nominated actress from HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm," has also RSVP'd, along with actress Vivica A. Fox and supermodel Petra Nemcova, a star of the "Sports Illustrated" swimsuit issue.
That's not all!
Actress Carmen Electra and Mario Lopez , the former "Saved by the Bell" and "Dancing with the Stars" standout, have also agreed to walk the runway.
Comedian and former-Detroit-nemesis-turned-booster Jimmy Kimmel will "interview" stars as they arrive. And Danny Masterson of "That 70s Show," will perform as a guest DJ.
Why all the hubbub to usher in the 2007 North American International Auto Show, which opens to the public on Jan. 13, and to the press next week?
It's all about General Motors paying homage to all types of great design and style, says GM Spokesman Michael Albano.
"GM has a long history of being a style leader in terms of car design," Albano says. "GM design is helping lead the company's turnaround."
Stay tuned. The automaker promises more stars and entertainers are yet to be announced for the event.
