I still miss my V8 cars, but I'm glad to see that someone makes sense, once in a while.

Honestly you Americans worrying about $4 gallons.

I filled one of my cars up earlier this week and paid £1.20 a litre ($1.84) so that makes a US gallon cost $7.

That car has an 80 litre tank so a full load costs me £90 or $147.....

I hereby apologize for everything from The Grassy Knoll to Watergate. I'm sorry about Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan, too...... :-[

Actually, Opie, I DO get rather tired of hearing Americans whine about the high cost of gasoline. We really need to get out more and see how the rest of the world lives. If it actually WAS our oil, coming to us courtesy of domestic production, then we could bitch all we want. But it ain't.

Remember how the entire Iraq invasion was gonna be paid for out of the profits of Iraqi oil?  Haven't heard much about that in, oh, the last 7 years or so. Have you?   ???  When you add in the costs of that war, the value of all the lives lost on all sides, the domestic costs of all those disabled veterans and so forth, the price at the pump in the US SHOULD be well over $100/gallon. But we pass most of that cost off into our military and defense budgets, which makes it possible to effectively hide how much our petroleum really costs us. Its an amoral shell game our government plays with us, with our blessing.

I guess my point is that its about time we all wake the fuck up and stop telling ourselves bedtime stories that are pleasant lies meant to placate the sheeple. I may be an apologist, but I sure as hell ain't no sheeple.   >:(  How about you?   ;)

I'm now whining, so please stop lumping me win with these "Americans" you so often deride.

I've been driving a small, economical car for years. A significant hike in fuel prices would not have an appreciable impact on my quality of life.

same here.  I've never complained about gas prices.  I think I've chosen a pretty good balance between performance and economy.  My choices might be different now given what's available v. when I bought.  Heck, I might have a bought a 3 series diesel if it were available when I bought mine in '01.

I was in Sacramento yesterday at the Audi dealership and they had a A3 diesel in the showroom.  Had Audi offered that option in '07 when I bought my A3 I might have done that too.

course nothing beat the Miata in the cheap gas/smiles per gallon race.

I wasn't aware that I was known for American deriding.... I was just making an observation that fuel prices in the US are extremely low compared to the rest of the world. The UK isn't the worst in Europe either  - in France fuel is around €1.50 / litre so over $2USD per litre.

As it happens - I drive two cars a 21year old BMW 525 (so around 26 Imperial MPG). And my Tiger Kit Car (22mpg on the road 10 on track work!). I could go and buy more economical cars but as the BM did 3500 last year and the Tiger did 3200 it isn't worth the expense. I actually clock up almost the same miles as either car on a pushbike every year.

You aren't, at least as far as I know. I was typing at the writer who started this thread.

Driving a fuel efficient car is necessary but not sufficient, OP. You have to look beyond the end of your own driveway.

People who congregate at places like this naturally tend to be highly aware of automotive choices in the marketplace. I suspect their are very few F-350 Super Duper Duties or Cadillac Escaladios among the membership's automobiles.

Yet the issue is not what  YOU are driving but what the WORLD will be like when "peak oil" arrives and how we as a nation are going to deal with the issues that will, per force, follow on from that. If you think that represents America bashing, then you have your head in the sand, Or someplace else.    :-\

Oh, pay not attention to me. OP. Sometimes my meds take a while to kick in...... ::)

Anyhoo, here's a story about a company that says it can give us plentiful, cheap energy from stuff that we normally throw out anyway. Some of you might want to call your broker!   :P
