Any changes to your "automotive family" soon?
« on: March 19, 2011, 05:04:22 PM »
Anyone else have thoughts of changing up the automotive family?

For a while, I've wanted to add the following vehicles to my car family:
1975 Caprice Classic convertible
1977 Caprice Classic sedan
1978 Caprice Classic coupe
1989 Caprice Classic 9C1
1987 Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupe

But, now ... the only vehicle I want to add to my family is a 1989 Caprice Classic (sedan or 9C1), to be the "summer" daily driver to my "winter warrior" 1979 Caprice Classic sedan.

Along with that, I've decided that, if the "right" '1989 CC (good shape, FI, cruise control, A/C, power, road trip worthy, etc.) comes along, I'll probably sell my 1972 MC.  Why?  Because my '72 MC is the only "expendable" MC I own ... the '76 is the year my parents had; the '79 is my first car; the '81 was my parents' car; and the '87 has sentimental reasons for the year....

But, even that plan could change, if my next checkup indicates I need more surgery ...and/or... I buy my own house....

In the meantime, my newest cars will have to do ... ~50 of them.  I bought 80 cars, ~30 of which I bought for my nephew, who is learning what each car is VERY quickly!

I bought these 2 for Dad:

I bought these for my nephew:

And, these are mine:

No immediate plans as our current cars keep plugging along, but with high mileage (150k on the wife's and 220k on mine) we like to have a plan B figured out in case we need to make a comparatively quick decision. Current plan B is a 2004-ish Subaru Forester 2.5XT. Saw one this weekend and learned from the owner that all the good STi bits bolt right up. A practical sleeper sounds like it could be a lot of fun.

I would think it would be, Stephen.

My manager had a 2003 Subaru Forester ... and just traded it in a year ago for an Impreza Outback.

The only other car I want ... a 2011 Dodge Charger, Toxic Orange with tan/neutral interior trim.  I wrote about it here...
http://www.motorgnomes.com/2011/03/charging-forth/

But, I can't exactly justify the expense of a new car ... especially given some additional health issues, possibly more surgery, and/or purchasing a house....

I am a fan of classic cars but would add them sometime later in my collection. After my Indica I have added a new Tata hatchback vehicle to my car collection. With the engine capacity of 1190cc and fuel tank capaciy of 40 litres it gives a mpg of 20kmpl.

I've just put my name down for an Audi A4 Avant with the little 1.4 TFSI petrol motor. Reports from the motoring press are encouraging - one user reckons it's one of the few cars he's driven where the fuel consumption matches the maker's claims.

I've had experience of the new breed of small turbocharged motors and I like them - not exactly tyre-scorching but overtaking speed is there when needed with judicious use of the gearbox. This car will give me much-needed cargo space. (Plus they offered me a grand more than expected on trade-in!)

Has it arrived yet?
Are you happy with it?

Yes indeed. I've had VAG products for many years, and I haven't had a duff one yet. It's big and roomy and comfy, just right for an old codger like me. Acceleration isn't its strongest point at low revs - it's a big heavy car. At cruising speeds on country roads, i.e. at 2000rpm or more, you can slot down to 3rd/4th and there's enough oomph to get past the usual Ulster traffic (tractors, school buses, ancient country boys in their rusty Subaru Outbacks). I've seen 50mpg+ on a longish run, but usually it's more like 40mpg for a day's work, and I reckon that's fine for a largish petrol-engined car. My little Ibiza 1.2Tsi was only good for 45mpg.

I decided against a diesel because I guessed incorrectly that the Gov was about to come down hard on emission problems and would impose heavy road tax and fuel tax on them. It hasn't happened (yet). I'm a Luddite and I can't come to terms with all the fancy "driver aids". I don't need them , I don't want them and they make any journey more bothersome than it needs to be. I want to press a button, not work my way for minutes through a menu. And as for Audi's "Pre Sense" - don't get me started!

They're a beautifully built car.  I like the understated elegance of Audis.
But I like a bit of oomph as well, hence my choice of an Audi S5 (333 bhp: almost adequate!)

Fuel consumption is important to me - my flower-delivery job equates to c.16k a year. Plus the bouquets would end up as an amorphous heap in the luggage area if I drove enthusiastically. I haven't ever owned a "fun" car. It's what comes of my upbringing by a curmudgeonly father.

Love Audi. I was driving an Audi RS5 for a couple of years. It was supposed to be a temporary drive, but I decided to lease it instead of the car I was wanting originally.

My daughter's just taken delivery of an Audi Q4 E-tron. It looks fine from the rear, but the front looks like a giant guppy. Her company paid for it - apparently it's very tax-efficient that way. I haven't driven it yet and I can't say it enthuses me much. I'm guessing that there won't be much in the way of driver involvement - just press the pedal and go.

(She's kept her Audi A3 hatchback for dog carrying and anything involving dirt  ;D)
