I want to thank all of you for kind comments. The commonly held view is that there was no "Australian" cars prior to the introduction of the Holden in 1948, but between 1900 and 1945 there were many unsuccessful attempts to produce such a car. I hope to feature another one of these attempts in the future.
Getting back to the Besst, I could not find a reason for why such an unusual name was chosen for the car. I can only presume that it was meant to be a pun on "Best".

"She's a beauty!" - Australian Prime Minister describes the first 48-215 Holden to come off the production line in November 1948

A well written and enjoyable article.  The list of "car manufacturers" who have come and gone over the last 130 years would be long enough to stretch to the moon and back.

I've been working on that list for more than 15 years, and each day it grows!

Great article, full of information I have never seen. I found this article and the website when I was researching the Morriss-London, a car that also had a connection to the Crow-Elkhart concern. What an enterprising company they must have been to have supplied chassis and running gear to so many producers. And we thought badge engineering was a recent phenomenon. Thanks again for all the research you have done.
