Saturday. No school. On a late Summer’s Saturday, typically a slow news day, most TV viewing might usually be planned around pennant races and Bob Newhart. On one such Saturday, two unusual broadcasts would go out over the airwaves...

Come to think of it, it would have been mighty interesting to have such a match as the progeny would, perforce, be known as Somethingorother BraunVonBraun, which, of course would be literally true! ::)

You know, I always sorta figured the whole model car + rocket motor idea must have occurred to other kids as well. Good to know, and a great read as always!
My brother and I were aiming for a land speed record, for our part. Took advantage of a downhill-sloping 50 foot driveway, an erector set, and C-class model rocket engines. We got in 3-4 runs, none of which went straight for more than 10 feet or so before pinwheeling.

They sold those hotwheels in the mid 80s with the real rubber tires - those might work well ...

The only thing to say, is "why didn't I think of that??!!"
I had Hot Wheels... I had model rockets.... Damn. :P
The closest I ever came was duct taping a couple of very large smoke bombs to the back of a bicycle. I don't know what I was trying to accomplish, but the ensuing fireball that occurred when one of the bombs ignited was pretty cool.
