Trying to sell coal to Newcastle
« on: May 25, 2010, 12:09:40 PM »
Apparently, when I was young, my first word was "car". Or rather "auto", as it is in my tongue. Since then, cars have never really left. I played with toy cars, then collected them, bought books. I used to have the idea I could possibly connect all toy cars. I have since then given up, though the collection has grown to 3000+ miniature cars. They are, in many ways, reminders that I never wanted to give up playing with toy cars. What a perfect world it was. No traffic jams. And if there were any, no angry people. Then I got the smart idea to simply start collecting car brands. Surely this was a hobby I could collect towards an "end"? Another dream poorer, I have been able to come way past 8000 car brands (I have not written the brand name down for many many makes) and no end in sight. I have travelled virtually from South Africa to Norway and from San Marino to the Soviet Union. I started that particular hobby around 1997, though the idea was older then that thought. In my childhood I was proud to be able to name more then 200 brands from heart. Knowing all that, I was rather surprised to find this site so late, as it is a fine piece of collective work, with many obscure and less obscure cars. It reminded me how little I actually know. So there you have it: I am selling coal to Newcastle. And I am a bad driver.

Not that I am stopping either hobby. They give me loads of pleasure. I suppose it is even helping preservate history on both the real and miniature counts. Now I am sure many of the guys here collect cars too. I will just add some pictures below.

Well, there are many parallels between our "automobile loving careers", leaving the fact aside, that "auto" was just my third word... :D

My 1/60 + 1/64 collecting development came to an abrupt end when I was around 10 years old.

Then I´ve decided to create a kind of huge scrapyard diorama on the floor of my room.  So I took a big hammer and smashed ca. 2/3rd of all my little toy cars.

Some years later I had an even more creative idea and burnt some of the few cars left , dropped them in liquid wax and burned them again.
Only one SIKU Citroen DS exists today, because it looks esthetical in a way...

Since the mid 1990s I´m collecting 1/43 cars, but not as excessive as sales brochures, automotive literature or playing card games.

And everytime I visit car fairs and walk by the miniature stands I see many toys I´ve owned once and feel a little sad...

So keep on collecting my childhood´s dreams.

Thanks!

The train set up is a favorite of mine.  It features several cities across the US ... from the Washington Monument to the St Louis Arch, to the Grand Ole Opry (Nashville TN), to the SF Golden Gate Bridge, to a Virginian plantation, etc....
