Tolle Vögel - 210601

Stimulated by the "Eigenbau of the month" by Wendax, I will start the series "Tolle Vögel", that means "Great Birds". This German designation

means self-made modifications of motorbikes in the 50s and 60s. This was a popular movement at the time.
Even if we are the AutoPuzzle (with vehicles of the beginning of motor vehicles, above racing vehicles and up to trucks and busses) I hope you are also interessed in motorbike-themes. Please let me know your opinion.

Here is the first one:
A BMW R 67 with sidecar and Renault 4 CV-Engine. Built in 1954 by an policeman!!! It was modifided over several years 'till the 60s and get the nickname "Petermann-Büffel", "Petermann-Buffalo".

Ein Henschel zieht am Berg und ein Mercedes
an den Türen. (and an attempt of a translation):
A Henschel in rushing up the hill, wheras in a Mercedes wind is rushing through the doors. c/o norberthanke

I'm not sure I should be posting on this thread, but I can say that in 1932 George Brough's company, of Nottingham, made a Brough Superior with an Austin Seven engine which looked like this:
Opinionated but sometimes wrong

Hi Allan, this thread is intended for private modifications. Not only complete adapted engines, but also modified frames and modified engines.
But no problem, every Brough Superior-bike is a "Great Bird"

Tolle Vögel - 210701

In the post-war times, a young guy had the idea to build a counter-piston engine for a racing motorbike. He exchanged a mattress for a 100ccm Sachs engine block. He looted scrap yards and slaughtered tank wrecks. A charging pump has been fitted to the upper part of the engine, later the original two-speed gearbox was sawn off and exchanged for a three-speed hurth gearbox. The first test run took place on the balcony of the flat, started with an electric drill. The whole thing was built into the frame of an Imperia motorbike and even received approval for road traffic! But only from sunrise to sunset, the lighting system was missing!! Those were the times... At the first and only race start succeeded in still managed a sixth place. A visitor in the paddock studied bike law for a long time and concluded: "I feel sorry for your  wife..."

At the end of the 1930s in Italy too, the trend towards so-called domestic raw materials began. So, this is how a group of universal geniuses, including an engineer, set about building a motorbike with a wood gas generator. They used a Zündapp K 500 and their engine was the first hurdle: wood gas engines must be much more highly compressed than petrol engines. How do I bring an sv-engine to a compression ratio of 1 : 12?!
They have made it!! Please don't ask how that went. They have made the boiler and filter housing from 1 mm thick sheet metal. The whole structure weighed 35 kg.
And lo and behold, she even drove! 4 kg of wood were enough for 60 km driving distance, max speed was 70 km/h.
But the vibrations caused by the unsprung rear wheel, this mixed glowing and non-glowing coal. So the boys had to reconstruct the cooker, but unfortunately my source does not report what comes of it.
