Title: Whitewall tires behind the Iron Curtain
Post by: grobmotorix on November 06, 2023, 03:30:30 PM
Were whitewall tires produced behind the Iron Curtain - inherently "decadent capitalist symbols"?

This discussion came up recently among some classic car enthusiasts.

So I'm starting a thread here with photos of "communist" vehicles with whitewall tires.

Were these possibly just imports, rings or western tire paint that found their way to those countries?

Only the EMW vehicles on the photos further down have been upgraded for the western export market with whitewall tires,
which at that time came from Belgium from the Englebert company.

Otherwise, I hope to find more pictures of such vehicles that were photographed with whitewall tires in the East before 1989.

So we start with Russia, where the copycat ZIS 110 has started the game:

And my last contribution to start this topic is the former GDR,
now the integrated part of a united Germany again.

Oh yes!

Thank you!

Did this GDR company really produce whitewall tires?
I could imagine the illustrator had to produce some b/w-contrast...

However thank you also for this old ad!
