Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk (NWDR) had the first post-war outside broadcast van, in german "Übertragungswagen", based on a Büssing Type 5000 TU bus, called Ü1, which was converted by Göppel.

The underfloor engine of the TU models severely restricted the boot space, and the high floor meant that the interior height was not ideal for the necessary technical equipment.
Ü2 and Ü3 were therefore built by Kässbohrer in 1953 on the basis of the Büssing 4000 T.
This also called for a christening, and it is good to see how much space was available inside for the technical equipment.

As early as 1951, Kässbohrer built the second West German broadcast van for Hessischer Rundfunk based on an O 6600. This meant that space was not an issue. There was plenty of storage space in the rear for the many metres of cable.

Towards the end of the 1950s, rear-engine buses finally became the norm, and body manufacturers, primarily Kässbohrer, had to switch to truck chassis with probe bodies for their broadcast vehicles. From the medium-sized LP 322 or LP 312 to the full-grown LP 2224.
