Autorama
« on: March 13, 2007, 05:49:28 AM »
I took my daughter to the Detroit Autorama this weekend. Her ulterior motive were to see 'Mater, Lightning McQueen, and Ray Mysterio (even though I've told her since Rick Flair retired, there IS no wrestling). But she started digging the flame pain jobs, awesome tuck 'n roll interiors, engines with blowers on top, etc.

I took lots of pics, so I'm weeding them out and categorizing them, but many defy categorization. In no particular order...

Yenko Stinger Corvair - During the Sixties, Don Yenko, the noted road racer associated with Yenko Sportscars, Inc. in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, produced the Yenko Stinger Corvair and a number of other high performance vehicles like the COPO (Central Office Production Order) big block Camaro.

It's an Edsel.

The Dodge La Femme - I used to own a house with a bathroom in those colors... A product of the Chrysler Corporation's Dodge division between 1955 and 1956. The La Femme's Raison D'ętre stemmed from Chrysler's marketing department's observation that more and more women were taking interest in automobiles during the 1950s, and that women’s opinions on which color car to buy was becoming part of the decision making process for couples buying an automobile. The La Femme was an attempt to gain a foothold in the women's automobile market.

'58 Chrysler Golden Sunrise - A Richard Zocchi custom built by Gene Winfield in 1982

A nicely turned-out 1957 Oldsmobile Holiday wagon.

1969 Blowfish Barracuda Hot rod builder George Poteet piloted this car , powered by a Mopar 4-cylinder Midget engine and a Mopar Performance P5 Hemi head, to a new record in the Blown Fuel Competition Coupe/Sedan Class F with a run of 255.7 mph in August 2006. The pass bettered the previous record of 230 mph, set in 1990, by 25 mph.

The Blowfish Barracuda project was first conceived during the 2004 Autorama in Detroit by Poteet and fellow car builder Troy Trepanier. Trepanier, along with his father Jack, built the car at their shop, Rad Rides by Troy, based in Illinois. Dodge Motorsports engineer Terry Dekoninck worked on aerodynamics with the group, with Mopar Performance engineer Jim Szilagyi also helping on the build as designer of the Mopar 4-cylinder Midget engine used in the 1969 Barracuda.

The group, certain the record would fall entering the event, decided to run the car conservatively at about 950 horsepower but was confident another 500 horsepower could be added with slight modifications, enabling the Blowfish to run in the 280-plus mph range.

More to come...

OK - it's at the end of February. Used to be in January, about 2 weeks after that other auto show at Cobo.

Should we order some AutoPuzzles shirts and get a booth? Or apply for a press pass?

Got any more shots from this Autorama?

Here are a few more. I've cropped and cleaned them up a tad. I don't have a lot of information on any of these (excepting the Centurion, Lightning McQueen and 'Mater, of course). If somebody knows more about these cars, please chime in!

Nice '56 'Vette

Polished top and bottom.

The Centurion doesn't look happy.

A slightly better look

This car create feelings in others that they themselves don't understand

Here's his best friend

Flame on!

Lots of Wagons and Panel Delivery trucks at this show

This one delivers well-heeled surf bums and their boards

Another angle

Bucket T. I think the "brass" is anodized metal, but don't know for sure.

No idea what this one is.

Kiddie Car

Cool Coupe

What is it? I don't know.

No, not what it seems. Same with the GT40 behind it.

In the beginning...

Fun pictures!    ;D

I could apply for a press pass. I are a journalist,  you know.  But it would be a lot easier to have YOU go and take pictures. That way I don't have to actually get dressed and to outside.    :o

You should come for this, MG and we could make it quite a meet-up.  I could probably get one or both of the Ohio Dan's to show up, kach and possibly Petra as well.  A good time to be had by all.

Ridler Guidelines & Rules

Don Ridler was the first professional promoter hired by the Michigan Hot Rod Association to assist them with their fledgling Autorama in the fifties. With Don’s creativity and professional approach in promoting, Autorama was able to grow tremendously, and eventually move to its present home at Cobo Center in 1961. In 1963, Autorama decided to honor Don Ridler, who had prematurely passed away, with an award given in his name.

Originally the award was given to the Best Vehicle first-time shown. Over the last forty years the award has evolved to better conform to new ideas, changing designs and concepts. Today it emphasizes creativity, engineering and workmanship. Anyone building a vehicle for Ridler competition should post these words on their garage wall. The vehicle that best represents these three areas will win the Ridler Award.

In addition to the above judging guidelines, there are a few hard and fast rules, with no exceptions.

   1. The vehicle must make its first public showing at the Detroit Autorama. Showing the vehicle at any indoor or outdoor show or any part of the entry, i.e. frame, engine or body, will make it ineligible for contention.
Realizing that car owners and builders may need some form or exposure to develop interest or to gain sponsorship and give credit to suppliers and/or sponsors, magazine and video build-up coverage is allowed. No articles, video footage or stories with photos of the vehicle in finished form will be allowed until after the award has been presented, i.e. car cannot be painted or upholstered to be used in any media format.
   2. The vehicle must prove minimal operability. It must start, move forward and backward under its own power, turn left and right and stop using the brake pedal, before it is placed on the floor for display. Keep in mind that this is a minimum to qualify. Operational function ability is something the judges will look at.

Once the final Ridler Contenders have been determined, the field will be narrowed to 8 Finalists, which will be referred to as the Pirelli Tire Great Eight. Because of the number of entries contending for the Great Eight, the process of elimination will begin on Thursday evening after move-in has been completed. Entries do not need to be 100% set-up, but should be to a state that they can be evaluated fairly. The Pirelli Tire Great 8 Finalists will be announced Friday morning and they will be introduced at the Circle of Champions Brunch on Saturday morning.

If an entry is selected as a Pirelli Tire Great 8 Ridler Finalists the car will not be eligible for any Autorama awards including class judging and special awards. Each of the Pirelli Tire Great 8 will, however, receive a cash award of $1,000 – paid on Friday of the show. Owners and builders should also keep in mind that they may be asked during the weekend to close up their vehicle to be checked for fit and finish, and to make sure everything is operational.

There will be a Pirelli Tire Great Eight Ridler Contenders meeting Saturday at 7:00 p.m. for the builders and owners. This meeting is an opportunity to meet the other finalists, the judging staff and ask questions on how your car will be judged.

The talented artists and craftsmen that build Ridler contenders strive for perfection. The Mission of the GM Performance Division is: to be recognized as the best at creating image and performance vehicles and powertrains. With this joint passion in common, it was natural that in 2010, the GM Performance Division decided to sponsor the indoor custom car show industry’s most prestigious award, The Ridler Award. The one-of-a-kind trophy, cash prize and jacket will proudly carry the GM Performance Division logo for the first time. The winner will carry the reining title of “Ridler Winner” for 2010 along with a cash prize of $10,000, a 1/3 scale Ridler trophy, special jacket, special accolades in the lobby of Cobo Center and the winning car featured on all 1st place trophies the following year.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call 586-771-7110 between the hours of 9:00 am and 5:00 pm EST or email MichHotRod@aol.com.

The Detroit Autorama is one event produced annually by Championship Auto Shows, Inc., North America’s largest producer of indoor hot rod shows. The Detroit Autorama is hosted by the Michigan Hot Rod Assn.
