What's In A Name #1 - "Capri"
« on: March 23, 2010, 05:56:59 AM »
Wikipedia tells us Capri (Italian pronunciation: ['kapri], often mispronounced /kə'pri:/ in English) is an Italian island in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the Sorrentine Peninsula, on the south side of the Gulf of Naples, in the Campania region of southern Italy. It has been a resort since the time of the Roman Republic. Features of the island are the Marina Piccola (Small Harbor), the Belvedere of Tragara, which is a high panoramic promenade lined with villas, the limestone masses called Sea Stacks that stand out of the sea (the Faraglioni), Anacapri, the Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra), and the ruins of the Imperial Roman villas.
Capri is part of the region of Campania, Province of Naples. The City of Capri is the main centre of population on Capri. It has two harbours, Marina Piccola and Marina Grande (the main port of the island). The separate commune of Anacapri is located high on the hills to the west.

The etymology of the name Capri can be traced back to the Greeks, the first recorded colonists to populate the island. This means that "Capri" was probably not derived from the Latin "Capreae" (goats), but rather the Greek "Kapros" (wild boar).

The name has been used for any number of consumer brands, venues and artists keen to borrow some cache from this historic and beautiful place:

Capri Theatre, a cinema in Adelaide, South Australia
Capri, an Italian television series
The Capris, an Italian-American Doo Wop group
Jordan Capri, an American actress
Capri, a color halfway between azure and cyan
Capri pants, a style of trousers
Capri shoes, a style of women's shoes
Capri, a brand of cigarettes
Tiendas Capri, a Puerto Rican bargain department store

Since you're at the AutoPuzzles site, the subject of this article is the autombiles manuactured and sold by Ford, and it's various divisions around the globe:

Lincoln Capri, a series of US luxury cars from the 1950s
Ford Consul Capri, sold sold from 1961 through 1964
Ford (non-Consul) Capri, marketed from 1969 through 1987, also sold in the United States as the "Capri"
Mercury Capri, a version of the Ford Mustang marketed under the Mercury marque in the United States from 1979 through 1986
Ford Capri (Australian), an Australian convertible produced from 1989 through 1994 and sold in the United States as the Mercury Capri

During its many iterations, the Capri has evolved from a tidy mid-1950's luxury car, to an overwrought land yacht, a few hiatuses, and a period where the name was hared by two different models on either side of the Atlantic. In this first installment, the Lincoln Capri and Ford Consul Capri models.

The progression in body style from 61 to 62 is some of the subtlest I have ever seen.

The original Lincolns were quite handsome.

Can't say as much for the Consul versions....... :disbelief: :shakehead:

Sort of a smaller reiteration on American fords of the time. Part two will include some tastier variations. But that's not to say there are no more turns for the worse...

That is because on this side of the atlantic we don't change cars every year - most of our vehicle designs tend to stay still for about 3 years before getting changed.

I think this is due to the smaller market and greater costs incurred in changing things around.

My personal favorite Capri is the 1956 Lincoln Capri, drove mine for years, "South Sea Coral with Black roof" WHAT A CAR!!!!! I miss it still. Sold her for the "Honor" of owning a 1965 Bond Equipe that I found in OHIO. I dabble with many makes but I always keep a MOPAR product in the driveway.
