According to the Mother Earth News article:
"Our engine choice for this particular vehicle was a two-cylinder, horizontally opposed Onan industrial model of 730-cc displacement and 16 horsepower."
Onan? Not the most serious-sounding choice of name for a company if you ask me, but what do I know...

Wait it gets better! Onan was absorbed by Cummins. So now the name they use for this line of motors is "Cummins Onan".  :lmao:

I guess they went with the cheapest engine they could find.  Only 16 HP from 730cc isn't a lot.
