« on: February 07, 2020, 06:27:42 PM »
A two part question for 1 point.   What is it and why is this particular example well known.

This is a Мобот-Ч-ХВ, decryption: "Мобот" - мобильный робот (mobile robot), "Ч" – Чернобыль (Chernobyl), "ХВ" – Химические Войска (chemical troops). It was designed and built by Moscow State Technical University for eliminate the Chernobyl accident. Now this machine, along with other robots, is on display in the Pripyat museum. You've certainly identified why its well known but this is not the Мобот-Ч-ХВ, Thats this vehicle. You can see it painted red to the left in your second photo.

Yeah I've seen the vehicle and the board in the Pripyat museum myself. It's not the name I'm looking for. It has a manufacturers name and its not the Moscow State Technical University.

OK, the plate in the museum is wrong, second try: robot-bulldozer from RTK "Vanguard" (РТК "Авангард")?

Yes although I remain to be convinced it was much modified for use. Its instantly recognisable if you know what the base model is.   Although Chernobyl liquidators my have referred to it as Chernobyl Mobile Robot for chemical troops it has a Manufacturer & Model name quite independent of that.

I had to Google that. :D

Yes although I remain to be convinced it was much modified for use. Its instantly recognisable if you know what the base model is.
You say it doesn't appear to have been modified much. This vehicle is:
  • unmanned
  • loader
  • dumper
Was the base model all three of these things as well?

The base model would not have been unmanned.

Sorry it's not an Aveling Barford and its not a hint. Forgot to make it something more innocuous.
