The coming holidays may give you some time for a complex group puzzle with rusty cars, straightforward as well as far fetched connections. So here it is: identify the "Rust" cars, find the connected "Water" and the automotive "Extension" somehow connected to the "Water". One point for each correctly found triple combination. If you can identify a connected pair, you just earn a 24 hour lock to find the third part. If you just identify a single picture, this will only help your contestants, no lock for that.
Have fun!

This seems to be pro stuff. Please notice that I have set a preliminary limit of 5 points per puzzler.
-
extension E is the Rosso Bianco Museum, water 8 is the Stifsbrunen Fountain in Aschaffenburg where the museum was located.
-
water 14: Hansaplatz, Hamburg, cca 1915, extension H shows the Riverbus in Hamburg.
Now I need to find two cars :)
-
extension E is the Rosso Bianco Museum, water 8 is the Stifsbrunen Fountain in Aschaffenburg where the museum was located.
Yes, the Stiftsbrunnen in Aschaffenburg and the Rosso Bianco Collection are correct. This combination Water 8 - Extension e locked for you for 24 hours.
water 14: Hansaplatz, Hamburg, cca 1915, extension H shows the Riverbus in Hamburg.
Correct again, Hansabrunnen and Hafencity Riverbus in Hamburg. Water 14 - Extension h locked for you too.
Now I need to find two cars :)
Good luck, shouldn't be too hard for you. :)
-

Correct again, Hansabrunnen and Hafencity Riverbus in Hamburg. Water 14 - Extension h locked for you too.
Now I need to find two cars :)
Good luck, shouldn't be too hard for you. :)
Just to make sure: is it a car from the Prototyp Museum?
-
No, the connection to the Hansabrunnen in Hamburg is more straightforward.
-
No, the connection to the Hansabrunnen in Hamburg is more straightforward.
Could Rust D be a Hammonia car? Then there's a connection as the main figure of the Hansabrunnen is Hammonia
-
Nice idea, but the solution is even easier.
-
maybe then it is Rust Z, which may have been a Hansa
-
Hansa is the right car to look for, but it is not Rust Z.
-
is it Rust N?
-
As for this: "Yes, the Stiftsbrunnen in Aschaffenburg and the Rosso Bianco Collection are correct. This combination Water 8 - Extension e locked for you for 24 hours."
Could the connection be a Gräf&Stift car?
-
is it Rust N?
Yes, name the model and the first combination will be solved.
As for this: "Yes, the Stiftsbrunnen in Aschaffenburg and the Rosso Bianco Collection are correct. This combination Water 8 - Extension e locked for you for 24 hours."
Could the connection be a Gräf&Stift car?
Gräf & Stift is a very good idea.
-
is it Rust N?
Yes, name the model and the first combination will be solved.
As for this: "Yes, the Stiftsbrunnen in Aschaffenburg and the Rosso Bianco Collection are correct. This combination Water 8 - Extension e locked for you for 24 hours."
Could the connection be a Gräf&Stift car?
Gräf & Stift is a very good idea.
Rust N: Hansa 2400
Rust U: Gräf & Stift Gelenkbus from the 1960s
-
Rust N is not a Borgward Hansa 2400.
Rust U is correct, so the first combination is solved.
-
Can Rust N be a Hansa 1100 from the mid-1950s?
-
Yes, it is, second combination solved.
-
Rust L : ex-Princess Diana Austin Metro
Water 26 : Diana Memorial Fountain in London
Extension : not found yet
-
A shot in the dark (or almost) :
Rust H : AMC Sundancer by Griffith from Fort Lauderdale.
Water 16 : a spa in Fort Lauderdale ?
Extension : not found yet.
-
Rust Y : a Moretti ?
Water 3 : Fencing Academy by Luigi Moretti in Foro Italico, Rome.
Extension Y : Gina Lollobrigida and her husband Milko Skofic at the start of the 2nd Rally of Cinema at the Foro Italico.
-
Rust : not found yet.
Water 19 : World Fair in Gent, 1913.
Extension C : a Volvo Amazon built in Gent.
-
Rust L : ex-Princess Diana Austin Metro
Water 26 : Diana Memorial Fountain in London
Extension : not found yet
Yes, L - 26 locked for you.
Rust H : AMC Sundancer by Griffith from Fort Lauderdale.
Water 16 : a spa in Fort Lauderdale ?
Extension : not found yet.
Rust H is an AMC Sundancer by Griffith, Water 16 has nothing to do with Fort Lauderdale. No lock.
Water 3 and Extension y are well found. Rust Y is not a Moretti. 3 - y locked for you.
Rust : not found yet.
Water 19 : World Fair in Gent, 1913.
Extension C : a Volvo Amazon built in Gent.
So far, so good. 19 - c locked for you.
-
Rust S : a Fiat Balilla ?
Water 3 : Fencing Academy by Luigi Moretti in Foro Italico, Rome. Also known as Casa Balilla Sperimentale.
Extension Y : Gina Lollobrigida and her husband Milko Skofic at the start of the 2nd Rally of Cinema at the Foro Italico.
-

That's your first corect combination.
-
Water 19 : World Fair in Gent, 1913.
Extension C : a Volvo Amazon built in Gent.
Rust : shall I look for a vehicle built in Gent ?
-
No, not that easy
-
Rust L : ex-Princess Diana Austin Metro
Water 26 : Diana Memorial Fountain in London
Extension : shall I look for something related to London ?
-
Water 19 : World Fair in Gent, 1913.
Extension C : a Volvo Amazon built in Gent.

The search should be at least as much fun as the finding. ;D

Rust H : AMC Sundancer by Griffith from Fort Lauderdale.
Water : shall I look for something related to Sundance Film Festival ?
-
Nice idea, but I don't think so.
-
The search should be at least as much fun as the finding. ;D
Sorry but my spare time is not unlimited so if I have no way to narrow down what I'm supposed to look for by asking questions I have to give it up. I just can't afford to spend days trying to locate some random fountain throughout the whole world ;D
Please unlock L-26 and 19-c.
-
Rust H - is there a griffith themed fountain or water thing somehwere?
-

The fountains don't seem to be the problem as you have already found them. :)
Unlocked as you wished.

Unlocked as you wished.
Don't unlock it, don't let a moment of desperation persuade you. Oko, you're almost there
-
Rust H - is there a griffith themed fountain or water thing somehwere?
No
Is really Ft Lauderdale the connection?
-
Don't unlock it, don't let a moment of desperation persuade you. Oko, you're almost there
Thank you for your gentleman's behaviour, Pal. I'll reinstate the lock for oko, and, yes, London is the place to look, Belgium is not.
-
Rust H - is there a griffith themed fountain or water thing somehwere?
No
Is really Ft Lauderdale the connection?
No
-
To add some value
I looked and looked and looked and realised that Water 11 shows somebody who kills a lion :) So I found the Simson fountain in Bern.
Now it was then very easy to find a Simson Supra in the group, which is J a type R from 1928
as for the extension. I have no idea yet
Does it have to do anything with Bern?
-
Rust H - is there a griffith themed fountain or water thing somehwere?
No

No
Does it have to do anything with Sundance Square, Fort Worth, TX?
-
No
-
And how about my Simson connection?
-
With the danger of someone else snatching away a point (I am about to reach my 5 point limit anyhow :))
Water 13 is in Swansea. Was one of the cars found in Swansea?
-

Sorry, I missed this one. Rust J and Water 11 are correctly identified, so J- 11 locked for you to find the extension which is connected to Bern.
With the danger of someone else snatching away a point (I am about to reach my 5 point limit anyhow :))
Water 13 is in Swansea. Was one of the cars found in Swansea?
Water 13 is in Swansea, but the connection is much more tricky here.
-
Rust J and Water 11 and how about the last extension? Maybe it's the Swiss Alpine Museum in Bern
-
"Water 13 is in Swansea, but the connection is much more tricky here."
Does it have to do anything with the words either Castle or Square :)?
-
Regarding Rust H for a moment. Is the water related to the word "Sundance" in any way?
-

No
Regarding Rust H for a moment. Is the water related to the word "Sundance" in any way?
No
-
There is another question at reply #56
-
"Regarding Rust H for a moment. Is the water related to the word "Sundance" in any way?
No"
Okies, then it is related to Ft Lauderdale somehow, ain't so?
-

just out of curiousity (er), do we have any car which was made in Liege?
-
regarding Rust R - do we have a water connection with Southfield where AMC was headquartered?
-
Rust J and Water 11 and how about the last extension? If it's about a tuning company in Bern, it may be M or N and then I am stumped. Am I barking up the right tree?
-
just out of curiousity (er), do we have any car which was made in Liege?
Not as far as I know

No

Wrong tree, but part of your idea can be useful.
-

Wrong tree, but part of your idea can be useful.
Like the connection is a factory from Bern? Extension F?
-
Not f, not a factory building, but basically you've got the idea right.
-
Not f, not a factory building, but basically you've got the idea right.
Is it a museum in Bern?
-
No
-
Is it a coachbuilder from Bern?
-
Yes, won't take long now.
-
Carosseriewerke Bern, Ramseier?
-
Not them
-
L-26 and 19-c unlocked as the 24 hours are over.
-
and my lock will also be up soon. I absolutely have no idea about the coachbuilder. Was it a pre-war company involved in passenger cars?
-
Yes, a well-known coachbuilder.
-
Carrosserie Graber?
-
No
-
I honestly have no idea, what you had in mind. Maybe it's very obvious, but I have no clue. You can unlock it.
-
Reluctantly unlocked, as it is a well-known coachbuilder. Small hint: the most famous car bodies came from a subsidiary in another town.
-
Probably Gangloff
-
Yes, locked for you again to find the matching Extension.
-
I still have no idea. Maybe extension i
-
No
-
I can only go by the power of elimination.
Definitely not: C, E, F, H, I, M, N, P, Q, R, S, T, U, X, Y, Z
So this leaves me: A, B, D, G, J, K, L, O, V, W
This may take a while
Hopefully not A, B or D
G is unlikely
K doesn't look like a Gangloff product to me
L doesn't look like a Gangloff building
O is too modern
Then let's start with V
-
You are right about G, K, L and O. And it is not V. And it is a straightforward connection to Gangloff.
-
B????
-
:disbelief:
-
I am totally in the dark. J?
-
No
-
Luckily not much choice left. It is not a museum, so not D. Hopefully not a caravan so not W. Which leaves me with A
-
Yes, any idea what the connection might be?
-
as you can see I still have no idea what you had in mind. Sorry
-
on a more positive note, you conveniently left the watermark visible on extension T. It wasn't difficult to find it, a carnaval in Maureillas in 2012. So by going backwards, is there a carnaval-related water theme?
-
:bag:
No carnaval-related water there, so it has to be the other part of the correct identification, with a little twist though.
-
:bag:
No carnaval-related water there, so it has to be the other part of the correct identification, with a little twist though.
Well, because usually there is a twist and there is a Musée Liege in Maureillas hence my earlier question on cars made in Liege.
So
Maureillas-Las-Illas
I put in Google: Illas Fountain and lo and behold: Fenollar Saint Martin in Fresco. Water 20!!!
I am on a roll (though I still don't know how you can connect a Roman relief of a chariot to Gangloff, but hey, nobody can be perfect)
As for the car, "Martin" is the keyword, right?
-
Well done! 20 - t locked for you. And to make it even easier, Martin is not the keyword. ;D
-
Trying to get into your head. Could W be the car? A Stimula made by De La Chapelle?
-
Get out of there! ;D
It is not W. The keyword was already contained in your reply #96, so it being not Martin really helps.
-
Is the word "Saint" where I need to find a connection to?
-
No
-
I fail to find any cars related to Fenollar.
-
Keep searching! ;)
-
Maybe Rust G as there was a French buggy called Fenollar
-
Yes, another one solved!
-
It will be a great relief to learn about the connection between Gangloff and the relief. Then another one will be solved.
Any other AutoPuzzlers would like to join the fun :)?
-
Rust K is a Borgward Isabella. I owned one in that colour! My very first vintage car.
-
Rust K is a Borgward Isabella. I owned one in that colour! My very first vintage car.
Would you like to follow this lead? Finding the water connection takes about 1 minute :) And then you can think about the extension!
-
Has something to do with "water 10" Isabella fountain, I suppose...
Rgds
Norbert
-
Welcome to AutoPuzzles, Norbert, Rust K is indeed a Borgward Isabella and Water 10 is the Isabella fountain. Now this combination is locked for you to find the automotive "Extension" connected to the place where you can find that fountain. I hope you enjoy this rather special puzzle as much as all the other challenges on this site.
-
My guess extension r - a race in Granada.
-
Sorry, Extension r is not in Granada.
-
Extension j, a car named Columbus, right?
Rgds
Norbert
-
No
-
I think Rust I is a Lancia Trevi in 'typical' condition. There's nothing obvious to match it in the Water section, but I wonder if you were to zoom out from Water 15, you might see Anita Ekberg in a black dress paddling in the Trevi fountain in Rome, in the film "La Dolce Vita"?
-
Tom, I knew you would be attracted by this puzzle. ;D
You are absolutely right with Rust I being a Lancia Trevi and and Water 15 showing Anita Ekberg in the Trevi fountain. This combination is now locked for you to find the matching extension.
-
I haven't visited much recently, but this puzzle has lured me back, though it looks very difficult.
I'm not sure about the matching extension. All I have so far is Extension q, the Mercedes 300S which appears in the film "Three Coins in the Fountain", where the three female leads stop at the Trevi fountain to cast their coins (or not). But maybe there's more to it than that...
-
rust B
Singer Rapier "Cabriolet", ("convertible" in US). "Roadster" might not be the correct specification in case of a 4 or 5 passenger car. A small lesson in this respect.... :grad:
Norbert

It is really as "easy" as that, nicely found.

rust B

Norbert
It is a Singer Cabriolet, although not a Rapier. A nice start.
-
I am silly,
Singer is Singer
Rapier is a model made by Sunbeam
it is a Singer Gazelle
(I once joined the Singer Club GB - was after a Vogue - never realized it
in my opinion one of the most typical classical British sedans - I am not so interested in GB sports cars
Norbert
-
Yes, it is a Singer Gazelle. :)
-
All unlocked. I've added a list of incomplete answers below the correct solutions to make it a little bit easier for you.
And the 5-point limit is lifted now, as I just wanted to prevent somebody snatching all the points at once. ;D
-
per suggestion from Tom_I, here's the possible explanation between Gangloff and that roman relief
-
Well found! :)
-
Rust Z is a Hotchkiss Grégoire. I think it could be connected to Water 16: Spa Aquatonic in Saint-Grégoire, France. As for the extension, I have no idea so far.
-

Well found! Rust Z - Water 16 locked for you. The full name of the Spa might help you. ;)
-
Thanks! Meanwhile an attempt for another thread: Rust T, a Lancia Aurelia B53 by Carrozzeria Balbo; Water 22, Aiuola Balbo in the Giardino dei Ripari, Turin; Extension u, Museo Nazionale dell'Automobile, also in Turin.
-

Perfect!
-
? - 19 - c: ? - World Fair in Gent - Volvo Amazon factory in Gent
Is there a car made in Gent?
-
No, this connection is a bit trickier.
-

Well found! Rust Z - Water 16 locked for you. The full name of the Spa might help you. ;)
Your clue directed me to the town of Rennes... where, as I just learned, Citroën set up a new plant in 1961. This leads us to Extension g: a Citroën factory under construction in Chartres-de-Bretagne, a suburb of Rennes.
-
No, this connection is a bit trickier.
But somehow related to Gent :) Was the car found in Gent?

Twice no

Twice no
Then is it the word, gent? Like gentleman?
-
No
-
then is it related to the World Fair?
-
Yes
-
I've spent a lot of time on this one today, and I noticed that the 1913 Ghent Fair was nearly always referred to in French as the "Exposition Universelle de Gand".
That set me looking for car-related things called Universelle, but all I came up with was a GMC concept from 1955. However, I eventually found mention of a German motorcycle manufacturer from the 1920s called Universelle. Searching then on "Universelle Motorrad" quickly brought up Rust X, a Universelle ZIIIB, which has now been restored by a gentleman called Peter Patz.
So Rust X, Universelle motorcycle - Water 19, Exposition Universelle, Ghent 1913 - Extension c, Volvo factory in Ghent.
-
wow, just wow
-
In my notes I had just put "French microcar?" against Rust A. I've always found them difficult to identify, so I was surprised when I found this one quite quickly (for me).
It's a Duport Parco, and searching for a water association came up with Water 12, the Fontaine du Port in Clermont-Ferrand in France. That in turn links with Extension f, part of the testing facility at the Michelin factory in Clermont-Ferrand.
-
How about the following thread: Rust Q – 1951-52 Chrysler Windsor; Water 18 – Peace Fountain in Windsor, Ontario, Canada; Extension s – a Ford Model 70 Transit Bus from the late thirties, in the service of the Sandwich, Windsor and Amherstburg Railway Company.

Well done!

We are gaining speed!

Well, how about it? Perfect, I'd say.
-
Extension v is a Rolls-Royce Phantom II ice cream van by Stuart Whitby of Whitby Morrison. It is used in Kensington Gardens.
Is the water related to Kensington?

Extension r is the great Tazio Nuvolari at the wheel of his Alfa Romeo P3 in Bergamo, Water 9 is the Piazza della Libertà (with a nice fountain at its centre) in the same town. As for the matching car, I was clueless, but a search for automobiles with the keyword Liberta brought up some funny, buggy-like vehicles that bear a strong resemblance to Rust E. Not quite sure about the correct name of the car, though: it seems to have originally been built by the Belgian firm Méan, and called Liberta Fun Car, while some (later?) examples are simply referred to as Liberta buggy...
-
And another one perfectly solved!
-
Rust W is a mock Edwardian tourer produced by Siva Engineering which was based in Dorset, in southern England. Judging by the wheels, this one is based on a side-valve Ford chassis. This links to Water 5, the Sivá Brada (Grey Beard) geyser near Spišské Podhradie in Slovakia. That in turn links to Extension n, a Mercedes-Benz C230 fitted with a set of Brada wheels.

Chapeau! That was a hard one in my opinion.

Rust F is a VW Passat pick-up conversion by Spreckelsen, a small German car dealer firm in Niedersachsen (wasn't easy to find). It can, surprisingly, be connected to Water 1, Fontaine monumentale at La Défense, Paris; the link between them is the name of the Danish architect of the Grande Arche de la Défense, Johan Otto von Spreckelsen. An extension has yet to be found...

Very good! F-1 locked for you.

While searching for the missing extension to la Défense with no result, I think I managed to put another set together: Rust M – Opel Bedford TK truck; Water 2 – Dr. Ludwig Opel fountain in Rüsselsheim (with a bronze figure holding a crankshaft in his arm); Extension p – Opel-Rennbahn, the abandoned, overgrown test track of the Rüsselsheim factory.

Well done, it is hardly known that the Bedford truck was sold under the Opel label too (without much success though).

You are right there. I live quite close to where Bedford trucks were made, and I never knew that.

Extension v is a Rolls-Royce Phantom II ice cream van by Stuart Whitby of Whitby Morrison. It is used in Kensington Gardens.
Is the water related to Kensington?
The water is related to Kensington Gardens. ;)
Is this a geographical thing? Kensington Gardens in London were originally the western part of Hyde Park, which is where the Princess Diana memorial fountain is, and it's where Kensington Palace is, part of which was the official residence of Diana, Princess of Wales.
So is the connection Rust L, Austin Metro ex Diana, Princess of Wales - Water 26, Princess Diana memorial fountain in Hyde Park, London - Extension v, Rolls-Royce ice cream van in Kensington Gardens, formerly part of Hyde Park?
-
Exactly!

Water 4: A fountain in Eybach nr Geislingen
Extension z: The Red Cross Museum in Baden-Württemberg, Geislingen
Hopefully this earns me a lock to find the car :)
Was it a car made in Baden-Württemberg? Near Geislingen :)?

Nice find, locked for sure. We are not looking for a car from Baden-Württemberg, but find out a little bit more about the fountain. That might help.
-
Oh, it's called the Adlerbrunnen. I think it's car D
-
Adlerbrunnen is correct, Rust D is not an Adler, and we are not looking for an Adler car, but ...
-
the AMC Sundancer by Griffith :) :)
-
Yes, because it is in fact an AMC Eagle (=Adler) Sundancer. ;D

[...]
Well done, it is hardly known that the Bedford truck was sold under the Opel label too (without much success though).
I didn't know about that either. But there were no other candidates left. Initially I thought of Rust D, but the closer I looked, the more I realized that it was not an Opel-Darracq... there were just too many small differences. That left me with the GM truck. Opel is related to Vauxhall, after all – why not to Bedford as well? Googling for Opel Bedford Blitz lkw was a shot in the dark, but it worked out.
A new thread: Rust V – Cushenbery Silhouette II Space Coupe; Water 24 – Silhouette Island, Seychelles; Extension w – Digue Baronette caravan, 1965.
I started on Extension w (I somehow felt this advertising idyll, obviously taken from a brochure of the sixties, easier to get to grips with than anything else still unsolved), and my search among vintage French caravans eventually came up with the name Digue. Looking for a link, I found La Digue, an island in the Seychelles, and this led me to Water 24, Silhouette Island, another member of the archipelago. The rest went quickly, a search for cars with Silhouette in the name brought up Rust V, the Silhouette II Space Coupe, a futuristic, Corvair-engined aluminium streamliner built in the 1960s by Bill Cushenbery, a Californian car customizer.
-
;D Great!
I never thought about the possibility that it could be easier to solve this puzzle backwards. Your reverse sleuthing is absolutely correct.
-
Rust Y is the BT750 by Jaroslav Brokes. I can't find any waters with Brokes or Nova Mesto Na Morave. Am I barking up the wrong tree?
-
Rust Y is correct, the tree is wrong. You must have a closer look at the waters. :D
-
And a new one: Rust O – LeMans Coupe fiberglass special, penned by American designer Strother MacMinn in 1959; Water 6 – Fountain at the Place du Jet d'Eau in Le Mans, France; Extension m – Kerscher Bodykit Le Mans for VW Scirocco 2.

Perfect!
-
It seems that two of the loose ends can be tied together: Rust Y, the BT750 racer and Water 13, Castle Square fountain with the BT Building in the background, Swansea. And the latter can be linked with Extension o, a concept proposal for a Triumph Vitesse 6 luxury tourer by Luke Sellars, Swansea Metropolitan University Design School. (A big thank you is in order to Pal, who did the hard part by identifying that obscure Czech racing car. I had no idea what it could be.)

Good work!

No, I was merely lucky. Nicanary posted a new photo of the car attached to its puzzle thread and I recognised the car immediately :) Hey, it's a team effort!
-
I feel I'm not making much progress on this, and as Pal has suggested, solving the rest of this puzzle may well be a team effort.
So to throw something into the arena, and working backwards, I have come across Extension l before. It's McKinley Street in Bellefontaine, Ohio, which was claimed to be the shortest street in the world. It isn't, though it may well be the shortest street in America. According to the Guinness Book of Records, Ebenezer Place in Wick, in northern Scotland, is the shortest, at just over 2 metres long.
Bellefontaine, Ohio, also lays claim to the oldest road in America to be surfaced with Portland cement. That's Court Avenue, which is Water 17.
But what's the rust connection? Cars were made in Bellefontaine in the early 20th century, and I suspect the connection is Rust D, but I can't identify it. The car called the Bellefontaine didn't look anything like that. Could it be a Zent? Other than that I'm stumped at the moment.

So far, so good. The solution triple is indeed D - 17 - l. The two places in Bellefontaine are correctly identified, the car has no geographical connection to Bellefontaine, but looking for a name might be a good idea. This combination is locked for you.
-
Does the name Bartholomew have anything to do with it?
-
No, getting colder
-
What about Logan?
-
No
-
Rust P is a mystery for me. At first glance it looks like a Simca 1000, but the front panel seems to have had a shield-shaped badge at the centre, something I don’t remember to have seen on any version, Abarths included. Indicators are odd, too… Am I wrong when I think that it is a Simca – maybe an obscure special edition, or one that has undergone some customization by the owner – all the same?
-
Rust P is, despite its looks, not a Simca. Furthermore it is not a private customization.
-
I'll have to give up on D - 17 - l, unless the car is a Luc Court, but I don't think it is, as I can't find one that looks like D.
-
Unlocked then.
-
Following that failure, let's have a go at Rust P, which I think is a De Carlo SL from Argentina, based on a BMW 700, but having a distinct look of a Simca 1000 about it. I wasn't too sure, initially, because all other examples I've seen pictures of have had twin headlamps, but I eventually found the web page where this car is for sale, and that's what its owner thinks it is. Maybe the front panel has been modified, or perhaps there were minor differences during (the very limited) production.
That would link to Water 25, the Fontana di Re Carlo II (King Charles II Fountain) in Naples, better known as the Fountain of Monteoliveto.
The location would then link to Extension j, an Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A with bodywork by Carrozzeria F. Giordano Bottazzi of Naples.
-
Another perfect answer!
-
Extension i is a Lincoln Tomaso Versailles, a special cut-down version of the common sedan. Searching for a connection with Versailles, France, I found Water 23, a member of a series of small baroque fountains placed along the two sides of the Allée des Marmousets (aka Allée d’Eau). A work of Louis Lerambert, it is called Danseurs et danseuses… and I have no idea how I could link it to an automobile. Another case for a team effort, it seems.
-
This ought to be getting a bit easier, as the available options are reduced, but it doesn't seem to be.
Rust 2, the Singer Gazelle: I've spent weeks trying to find a Gazelle connection, but now I think it's just been a brilliant piece of misdirection.
Does Rust 2 link with Water 7, the fountain at Elvis Presley's birthplace in Tupelo, Mississippi, the connection being that Elvis was a singer?
I can't work out the Extension, though.
-
This ought to be getting a bit easier, as the available options are reduced, but it doesn't seem to be.
That’s what I feel, too. The further we get in this game, the more difficult it is to move forward.
A small step: Extension k is a Ford Scorpio / Granada Mk.3 design proposal by Harm Lagaay from 1985. It is the missing part of the K - 10 - ? combination, I think.
-

Correct so far, the connection to one of the rusty cars is quite straightforward though.

I must admit that I made a mistake by thinking the fountain was at Graceland, so the extension is not connected to Tupelo. Sorry for that.

In that case, is the extension connected to Memphis, Tennessee?
And do I get a lock for 2 - 7?
-
And do I get a lock for 2 - 7?
For sure, Rust B - Water 7 locked for you.
-
In that case, is the extension connected to Memphis, Tennessee?
Yes
-
Of the remaining extensions, I reckoned it had to be x, a late 1940s Plymouth "Woody". Knowing the Memphis connection was a great help, as searching for "Plymouth Station Wagon" and "Memphis" brings up this picture. The car was donated to the Memphis Academy of Art by a benefactor in 1949, and was used for field trips and mobile exhibitions.
So Rust B: Singer Gazelle - Water 7: The "Fountain of Life" at the birthplace of singer Elvis Presley - Extension x: Plymouth Station Wagon owned by the Academy of Art in Memphis, Tennessee, where the Presley family moved to in 1948.
-
Rust R has been frustrating me for quite a while, as I was fairly sure I had identified it as a BSH, a French kit car intended to be based round a Renault 8 Gordini as donor car. The initials are from the surnames of François Benais and Max Saint-Hilaire, who produced the kits. Up until now, however, I've found it impossible to make any connection to any of the Water entries.
One thing I learned early on while Autopuzzling is that you often have to use search terms in different languages, given the international nature of the membership and the subject material. I don't know why I didn't do it before, but assuming that the car would be in France, and quite likely be for sale, I searched using "BSH voiture à vendre", and found the actual car, and very instructive it was too.
It seems that the first owner, a M Guiry, included his own name when registering the vehicle, so the documentation shows it as a BSH Guiry.
From there it's a short leap to Water 21, a water pump in Guiry-en-Vexin, in the Val d'Oise in northern France, and from there to Extension b, electric all-terrain vehicles which can be hired at the Château de Guiry for use by visitors with reduced mobility.
So Rust R: BSH Guiry - Water 21: Water pump at Guiry-en-Vexin - Extension b: All-terrain mobility vehicles at the Château de Guiry-en-Vexin.

As easy as that! :D

That leaves two questions:
- What is Rust D and how is it connected to Water 17?
- What is Extension d and how is it connected to Water 1?
Perhaps I'll add hints this weekend.
-
Extension d is a 1906 Lion Peugeot Type VA, displayed at the Musée de l'Aventure Peugeot in Sochaux. Now we only have to find a connection with the Fontaine monumentale at La Défense…

Aaargh!!! I goofed that one up. I should have double-checked. :(
Please take the picture below as the new Extension d. Sorry!
-
I think I found it: F - 1 - d: Spreckelsen pickup - Fontaine monumentale at La Défense – A Delage D8-120 Sedanca Coupe by Saoutchik in the showroom of La Colline de l'Automobile at Paris-La Défense.
-
Yes!
How about the last missing one?
-
Is Rust D a Luc Court ?
It's been already asked.
-
Although I did not find the car, I suspect car D may be a Glide.
Wendax said that looking for a name might be a good idea. So the road in Bellefontaine was paved by George Bartholomew.
Now, the Glide was produced by John B Bartholomew.
-
Not a Glide.
The car today:
-
Is the name of the car a translation of Bellefontaine into another language, like Schönbrunnen, or something similar?
-
No need to translate this time.
-
Duh! I can't believe I missed this!
When I originally looked up Bellefontaine in my 1968 Georgano encyclopaedia, there was a photo of this car on the same page!
It's a Belle, made in London from 1901 to 1903.
So Rust D: Belle - Water 17: Court Avenue, Bellefontaine, Ohio - Extension l: McKinley Street, Bellefontaine.
-
There goes the final one, although the car was not built in London, but in Switzerland by Kaufmann of Tägerwilen, while Georgano thought it was built by Berna.
-
This leaves me awarding the points to our masters of deduction:

I hope solving this puzzle provided as much fun and brain twisting as it did for me constructing it. Now I have to start collecting interesting objects for the next edition. :)

A brilliant puzzle. Thank you.

I just wanted to say how thoroughly impressed I am by Wendax for being able to create such an intricate puzzle, and by all the players who solved it. Hats off. :hail:

Thank you for the flowers! ;D

As you may have noticed, your brilliant, sophisticated group puzzles are addictive for me. This Water edition was no exception – thank you for the fun. I'm looking forward to the next one!
-
I had to remind myself that I have a PhD thesis which needs to be finished by April. So I couldn't spend as much time as I wished on this one, but it was still fun
-
Thank you very much! The first rusty car is already waiting for next year's puzzle. No idea yet what it will be about, but some day intuition will rise above the foggy scrapyard. ;D
