Is this a 'historic racing class' picture rather than period?

It's a period photo.

Is it VW-based?

I can't find any reference to the engine fitted, but I think it is probably not a VW.

Harper VW

It is the correct answer. It's actually the Harper Mk 5, built by Craig Harper in the former Rhodesia. Photo taken in Botswana in 2004.

I have no information about the car's engine, but it's possible that you do have access to details about the car.  I apologise to D-type who had asked if it was VW-powered.

One point to you.

Thank you for the point. I am not sure, which engine has been used in the puzzle car.
Another version of it was BMW-engined (see attachments)

Look like a Ford Anglia and a Lotus 7, or one of the cars built in the manner of the Lotus.

That's what they look like indeed. I was wondering if someone had more specific details about them.
