Southern England. It could indeed take some time - the UK was very active just after WW2 in the motor sport department, as you know. Lots of minor events that sprang up and then disappeared after a few years. You need to know where to look!

I have ploughed through the Bs and found nothing, there are loads of Cs so is it a hillclimb beginning with C?

The book (Julian Hunt's one) says that Cockley Hill is near Fordingbridge, Hampshire.  Two hillclimbs were held there in 1946 and 1947. 
I only looked at the index and not at the pictures!  ;)

That's very decent of you D-type. Maintaining standards at AP and all that.

Unfortunately Tobytwirl, it is I believe a prerequisite to have that book. I have never seen the image anywhere else although I think it is within the rules of AP for me to advise you that it is from the Guy Griffiths Collection.
