Is it the engine tuner that's missing - like Giannini?

No, it's not someone's name.
You'd have to understand the history of this particular car to get the name and why it was called that.

Fiat 500 base (one of many....) ?

Yes, as most were..!

Actually this car didn't have a Fiat engine..  Sorry for the misinformation.

It is a Nardi- BMW 750, known as the Nardi Boby. It was however bought by Bernard Taraschi, who had the temerity to race it as a Giaur, the company he owned. In 1952 the car went to the States and was fitted with a Crosley engine - and raced as  Nardi-Crosley!

Aha, you've found it!
This picture was taken whilst it was a Giaur though, so I'm still looking for that other part of its name at the time!
Shoud be easy now so locked for tobytwirl.

Its full name is 1947 Nardi-Danese 750 Boby Sport. It was never actually a Giaur, it just got erroneously called one for a short period.

That's certainly what it started life as in 1947, when it was powered by a BMW motorcycle engine.
But when Berardo Taraschi got hold of it he re-badged is a Giaur and then sold it in 1952 to Frank Dominiannii the US, when the puzzle picture was taken, and at that time it was called the Giaur 750 Sport ******.  Dominianni replaced the engine with a Crosley and continued to race the car, I believe as a Giaur-Nardi.
I can't guarantee all the information is correct but that is my understanding of what I have read.

I must admit I cannot find the magic word. There is certainly an interesting story here but one of the players was Tony Pompeo, who imported many european cars and was by all accounts quite a salesman. He knew for example at the time, that a Giaur was a much more saleable proposition than a Nardi. He once imported a Gilco-Moretti as a Giaur Champion, - to which it had a passing resemblance. Did he call the Nardi the same names?

No, and I'm beginning to wonder if I've understood the name correctly.
Still, have another go and I'll give you a clue: think geographically!

Well Roma and Teramo appear on the badge, and I can just imagine how a salesman in the US would consider adding an Italian sounding name to add to the exotic mystique. How about Dolimiti after its first victory?

I must get that Nardi book!

Well its early race career was at Bridgehampton, Watkins Glen and the Giants Despair Hillclimb. I cannot imagine it was named after the latter, how about
the others?

Yes, that's what it seems to have been called when it first started to compete in the US!
You have your point at last!
