Abarth?
Not Abarth.

Actually there was a Ferrari that could be this. Please tell me it isn't.
I could tell you it isn't, but then I would be lying.

There is a 1948 166s Ferrari that looks like this but I have only ever seen the front. They were bodied by Allemano but they all had wire wheels. One however was rebodied by Colli, presumably after an accident, and it had disc wheels just like the one in the photo.

I assume you are referring to this car?

Of you could be referring to this car, which is a little better known but still not the puzzle car...:

I feel I am on intimate terms with every early Ferrari except this one. It looks so 1940s and I thought it was the Colli car, but I can find no trace of the pictured car - so please unlock. I hope someone knows it.

So is this the Allemano-bodied 166S S/N 003S after it was crashed and rebodied by Colli into the picture you've posted?  It was actually crashed again after it was bodied as per your picture so maybe it's its second rebody?
It's not pictured looking like this in Carrozzeria Allemano or in any of the books on my Ferrari shelves (and I have 2 shelves with some 40/50 Ferrari books on them...!)?

This is the answer. Following a crash on November 14, 1948, 003S was partially rebodied by Colli as in your photo (taken at the Circuito do Porto, June 15, 1950). The car suffered a subsequent crash sometime in the 1950s and underwent a complete rebody by Colli as a result. The puzzle image shows 003S with this second Colli body. Below are images of 003S with the original Allemano body, following the partial Colli rebody, and with the full rebody by Colli (note license plate). I am awarding a point to you, but also to tobytwirl for coming so close to the solution.

And don't feel bad. I have a lifetime's collection of rare Ferrari photos and documents, much of which has never been published. ;)

Thanks!
Strange that there are so few images of it on the Internet.
I wonder what happened to it?  Most of the Ferraris built still seems to exist but maybe not this one..

003S was eventually crashed again and scrapped. Only the engine and gearbox survive today.

No; different body so it gets its own puzzle!
