..before 1950, many talented designers were self taught, just like Jim Roberts. He was “discovered” professionally in 1948. He traveled with his father to South Bend, Indiana on a business trip. An Alfa Romeo belonging to a Studebaker executive was parked outside their hotel. Jim drew several sketches of the car. The executive saw the quality of Jim’s work and invited him to Studebaker styling studios the next day. There, Jim met Raymond Loewy and was immediately offered a job.
