Huster Akiera Obambe, from Congo-Brazzaville, has designed and manufactured a sports car. He is a self-taught automobile engineer who started working on his project in 2012. However, he is also a computer scientist by training, which explains why he first designed his car using a 3D software so as to ease the manufacturing of all the parts of his sports car. The plans he has conceived could then enable Huster Akiera and his team to replicate the same car in series, if need be. This car’s code name is HOZ Alpha.

After the team was confident with the design of the car, they started to manufacture the first parts in 2015 (i.e. about 3 years later). Huster Akiera does not have all the necessary tools to manufacture a car, not even a modern garage. However, with his team, he is proving how ingenious they are. Indeed, they are not assembling parts that were prefabricated. They are using their plans to manufacture the parts which are required to complete the car. And one of the challenges is to make sure that the car looks like the 3D model that has been conceived. And this model is quite unique.

Huster Akiera wanted the HOZ Alpha suspension system to look like that of a Lamborghini. In other words, he wanted an independent rear suspension (IRS), and they have managed, with ups and downs, to make it! And this is quite a feat given their working conditions. The team had to choose an engine for this powerful two-seater and tested 4 of them before picking the right engine. Indeed, if most components or parts of the car have been designed and manufactured in Congo-Brazzaville, it was impossible to manufacture the 110 horsepower Toyota engine, the tires, etc.

As for the propulsion engine, it will be controlled by an on-board diagnosis system (OBD system) that will monitor, using a computer tablet, the car’s speed, location, etc. A remote sensing system will also be embedded so as to automatically stop the car if there is obstacle in front of it.

With this prototype, Huster Akiera Obambe wants to prove that even with limited resources, it is possible to manufacture a sports car. A more subtle question is the following: what could Huster Akiera and his team be able to achieve if their working conditions could be significantly improved? Africa’s industrialization is possible if Africans are trusted and given the necessary funds to manufacture their own capital goods, among others. The car is expected to be fully completed in early 2020.
