2010 Chevrolet Impala Design Study
« on: December 28, 2006, 12:42:44 PM »

http://www.motortrend.com/features/auto_news/2006/112_news061024_future_chevy_impala

The car you see here is a rendering based on one of two design proposals under consideration for the 2010 Chevy Impala, a rear-drive sedan to be built on the same Zeta rear-drive architecture as the 2009 Camaro and-as we revealed exclusively last month-also likely to underpin an all-new Pontiac Grand Prix.

Unlike the Grand Prix, which is being pitched as a mildly tweaked version of the all-new Australian-designed and engineered Holden Commodore slated to make its debut at the Chicago Auto Show in February, the new Impala will feature unique sheetmetal from bumper to bumper.

A rear-drive Impala is a logical move for Chevy. It allows GM to increase the Impala's size, making it a clear step up from the all-new Malibu due next year. It also allows Chevy to offer a mainstream car with powertrains of more than 300 horses, including a range of V-8s. Finally, it provides a foundation for a two-tier Chevy range, composed of front-drive small and medium-size cars and rear-drive larger cars.

Building a new Impala off the Zeta architecture also will enable GM to spread some of the investment required for the Camaro across two model lines, as the cars will share mechanicals and numerous sheetmetal components under the skin. That eases the pressure on the Camaro to return the same profit margins Ford needs to justify building the Mustang, which shares few parts with any other FoMoCo vehicle.

Final decision on the new Impala's styling isn't likely until next year. But the car will feature Chevy's bold new corporate grille and an interior that builds on the substantial improvements in quality and presentation shown by the new Tahoe and Suburban.
Zeta Rear Suspension

NEED TO KNOW

6.2-liter V-8 is likely to be the top engine. Expect at least 400 horsepower, with cylinder deactivation for improved fuel economy. Also likely to be available will be GM's high-feature 3.6-liter V-6 and a 5.3-liter V-8.

Standard transmission is likely to be GM's new six-speed automatic. Performance versions, badged SS, probably will be offered with a six-speed manual.

Bold new grille is similar in execution to the 2008 Malibu's. Front overhang is short, and the wide front track means the wheels are pushed right to the corners of the car, giving it a sporty stance.

Fast backlight gives a rakish, almost coupelike profile that pays homage to the beautifully proportioned Impalas of the late 1960s. Rear deck is short and trunk opening narrow to accentuate strong shoulders.

Zeta rear suspension also will be on new Camaro and Pontiac Grand Prix. Features beefy L-shaped single upper link, two lower links, and adjustable toe-control link. Coil-over shocks keep entire assembly compact.

If that's a design exercise then they never even left the couch, never mind actually breaking a sweat. I've crapped more interesting car designs. Even while sick. That car is blander than Bland Dan McBland. It has no oustanding features, little in the way of detail, few points of interest and nothing memorable to speak of. The only think even remotely notable about the car is it's utter lack of anything remotely notable. It might as well have never existed. In fact, in my mind, I don't think I even saw it to begin with. I don't car if it has 600hp, if there was a parking lot full of these, I'd go drool at a Camry.

Wouldn't mind the engine though. That would be sweet. Just not in that bobbing turd.

When a car like the GTO gets criticized for being bland, one has to wonder what braindead coma clown felt this might make a nice addition to the lineup. Frankly, I liked the GTO. I thought it was a nice package that displayed taste and restraint, much like the rest of GM does not.  Sadly, most of the public, especially the ones with money, did not share this feeling. So what does the General do? It creates something far blander and says it's a study. Like most of my college studies, this too is instantly forgettable and well worth the effort spent to permanently erase it from memory.
I'd ask what were they thinking, but it's obvious they weren't. Apparently, napping is considered a good thing to do over at GM. Barring that, they satisfied their handicapped quota by hiring narcoleptics. Not that there's anything wrong with that, it's just difficult to build excitement when the entire room is has been put down for quiet time and perhaps a happy nappy.

Opinionated? Moi? Mais non! I just recognize a safe target when I see it.

Any rant worth reading must have dissent. Otherwise it's just affirmation of the obvious. Wanna hear me rail on about how falling into a threshing combine really, really hurts? Me neither.

Of course, oftentimes my rants are simply an exercise in typing. Gawd knows, I just love to hear myself type.

On the postive side, I think one could say the design is EXTREMELY inoffensive!    :-\

Well, I actually see lots of interesting design details, like where the A pillar meets the roof, and the cutlines for the front fenders, and the indented beltline (shades of late 60's Oldsmobiles).......
the rear end suffers from Bangle-wanna-be-itis, but it's still not as bad as what he did with his first gen 7 series.....

I would not say that overall it's an attractive or desireable effort either, but there are some interesting little details...............

When was the last time you saw a new car and felt that  "I gotta get me one of them!" pull? Me neither..........maybe the new gen Mini and the Porsche Cayman..............not much else..............

Yeah, but did you actually see one, or just see pics and such?
I'm talking about on the street on in a showroom. Although, I'd say the last time this happened to you is sitting in your driveway (GTO)..........

Usually, when that happens, I find myself thinking, some years later: what was I thinking?

Same thing with dames.

As bland as it is, it is so much better than the current Impala.

Expanding the size? does that mean the Impala is going to be full sized again? RWD???? You mean GM is finally waking up?

The problem with the GTO is it doesn't look any different than the GP & GA twins...

This car isn't really what I'd call "pretty", but one detail on it just steams my beans whenever I see it done on any contemporary Chevrolet "Impala".  Look at the taillamp lenses.  Count the round elements.  One-two.  This my friends is NOT an Impala.  It is a Biscayne or a BelAir, but anyone of a certain age knows with absolute certitude that any Chevy that wants to truly be an Impala MUST have three round taillamps per side.

What's Bob Lutz' phone number?  I want to call him and give him a piece of my mind about this outrage. >:( ( ;D)

I'd say the 1959 Impala - the second production year for Impalas - was real.

But that was BEFORE the tradition.   ;)

Though less desirable than the '59, the 1969 model eschewed round tailights, as well. As did the 1970 cars.

Round = Gone.

3 = Impala.

I always liked those Impalas.
