Alles Mit Motor - Die Standard / Gutbrod Story
« on: May 01, 2022, 04:10:33 PM »
For almost a year now I have been working part-time in Stuttgart as an archivist for a private collector. He has, among others, around a dozen Standard and Gutbrod vehicles. Last September we decided that it would be nice to do a Gutbrod book :)! I contacted Otfried Jaus, who's been researching the history of the brand for 30 years and put together a soft-cover book in 1994. Then I talked to Paul Schilperoord, who wrote a book on Josef Ganz. We also recruited Andy Schwietzer, a renowned German motorcycle historian.
And last week the book was introduced at the RetroClassics show in Stuttgart with a special exhibition of 10 Standard and Gutbrod cars and trucks which received a Special Prize!

The book is 272 pages, German language, over 220 illustrations. Deal with everything Wilhelm Gutbrod and his companies produced between 1926 and 1954 - motorcycles, cars, trucks, agricultural machines - everything with engines (hence the title).

Price is EUR 48.90. You can order it at https://gutbrodshop.rareandunique.media or you can send me a PM

Must be an interesting book looking at the team of experts who have worked on it!

Too bad it's merely available in German and the index and synopsis which can be seen on the website that sells the book is only in German as well. Somebody who doesn't speak the language but has an interest will need Google translate to understand anything on the linked page.

Adding an English version of the index and synopsis may convince some interested people who are hesitating to purchase the book.

An English edition itself will broaden the market I assume? Since the German manuscript is available and you "pnegyesi" speak both German and English making an English edition available should be feasible for a manageable amount of effort and costs.

Thanks for your comments.

I have added some pages from the book. The problem is that this book was produced specifically for the German market as not a lot of people heard about Gutbrod from abroad. The other problem is that the book was supposed to be 230 pages but almost ended up being 306 pages :) I had to compromise a bit so the English-language summary had to go (among other things). Another limiting factor is shipping. Even with Rare & Unique Vehicles we have problems shipping outside Europe, but with the book it really gets expensive. I am happy to give you a discount if you choose to order the book :)

Adding some pages of the content, as you did, provides a good preview for potential customers. Making a book is a labour of love and requires passion, perseverance, patience, a lot of time, knowledge and many more skills.

If you want to sell to not only native German speakers it is still recommendable to make your Web Shop page bi-lingual (German & English). Probably the vast majority of customers will be native German speakers, yet documenting history is important work to cherish the legacy of the industrial revolution in all its aspects vivid. Limiting to merely one language group is not doing the amount of work sufficient justice.

Good luck on the sales of this wonderful book with valid and important historical value.
