This is a home built vehicle. What is its nickname ans what (fairly unique) engine does it have under the hood?

Aha...It's known as the 1931 Shotwell, after it's creator Bob Shotwell and features a 1931 Indian motorcycle engine (77.2 cid 4 cylinder).  Now in the Jay Leno collection:

Not what I first thought, then. Is this car powered by a motorcycle engine?

Was it built by an American teenager who went on to become a professional pilot?

I neither know what became of him, nor how old he was when he built this car, just "young".

A young Minneapolis student bulit this car driven by a four cylinder motorcycle engine. The car is forty-six inches high and accomodates two passengers. It will travel eighty-five miles an hour and run forty miles to the gallon. Front wheels, axles and brakes are all Ford.

Well found! Locked for you to find the name of the builder.
A hint: Try to find the source you used online.  ;)

I did wonder about that - it has V. N. Carlisle with the Minneapolis address handwritten under the image, but just above it has Robert Shotwell handwritten with a line apparently leading to the "young Minneapolis student".

Oh boy, I've made a mistake. I thought V. N. Carlisle was the builder, but it definitely was built by Robert Shotwell. The car still exists and was puzzled before: https://www.autopuzzles.com/forum/2011-39/what-it-is-196-solvedgtgtgtphilbert-the-puddle-jumper-shotwell
Furthermore Zerk was right when he just guessed it was the Shotwell aka The Puddle Jumper.
So here is one point each for Zerk and Rusty Chrome.
