Here is the scant information that could be found: Designation "Bauernschlepper" or "Landtraktor", built 1937/38 with drive by wood gas generator (which can also be seen in the picture). The generator was probably made by Imbert, Cologne, which was the largest manufacturer of such drives. Possibly also Gustloff-Werke, Weimar, which was closer. Instead of Gustav Pöhl, I would have had the vehicle built by Schumann in Werdau (a competent manufacturer and only 25 kilometres away). Even though this vehicle is not mentioned in Ch. Suhr's book, my guess is Schumann.

Great find. Built by Pöhl-Werke, with Imbert-wood-gas-generator, 1938/39
I want to give you the point without going on searching for the designing company, which was Auto-Union

Congratulation to this hard earned point!

Sorry, but this tractor was not built by Pöhl-Werke. The story is as mostly more complex. There was a experimental woodgas tractor called Bauern-Trecker designed by Gustav Pöhl on instruction of the Reichsstelle für Raumordnung. It was displayed at the Berlin car  fair in 1938, see first attached picture. But even that tractor was not built at Pöhl-Werke, but at Fribi-Werke in Berlin-Prenzlau. Pöhl had already sold his tractor company in 1918 and left that company soon after. By 1938 he was working as a freelance engineer. During the 1938 exhibition Auto Union was asked if they wanted to develop the Bauern-Trecker further in order to build it on a bigger scale. After analyzing the Pöhl prototype Auto Union completely redesigned the tractor. They even changed the chassis to a ladder frame. They planned to build a new two-cylinder boxer engine for it, but kept the Ford engine meanwhile. The first Auto Union prototype was finished in 1939, unofficially called AU I, see second picture. When the project was cancelled in 1940 six prototypes had been built, three each with air tires resp. iron tires. The puzzle tractor was one of the other two air tired specimens. I've attached another picture of it from the Generator-Jahrbuch 1942.

very very interesting
Of course, I have no idea about German tractor production, even less about less important companies such as Pöhl-Werke, etc. and have to rely on rather easily accessible sources, which, although independent of each other, obviously all three report completely incorrectly:
All three sources, including translations, attached to this mail

Here again a Pöhl-Werke description, which was unfortunately cut off in the previous answer

Have to change the description of this tractor from 'Pöhl-Werke, 1938/39, wood-gas-generated, designed by Auto-Union' to 'Auto Union Project 2, wood-gas-generated, based on Pöhl-Deiters-construction, 1939'. Hope this is the right designation. See attachment.
Always open for corrections. Thank you 'Wendax' for helping to name the puzzle correctly

The main source for my response was a six-page chapter about that tractor in Christian Suhr's book "Kraft der vier Ringe - Nutzfahrzeuge der Auto Union und ihrer Marken Audi, DKW, Horch, Wanderer, NSU" which I consider a very reliable source.

Thank you for the point, this challenging puzzle and the additional comments.
Given the age of our puzzle objects, it is not always easy to obtain reliable and verifiable informations, and it is the supplementary discussions that make this forum so appealing. That is one of the reasons why I am involved here.

You are so absolutely right.
Especially with this puzzle, I was really surprised at the dynamics it experienced. It was actually a quickly created replacement puzzle for another one that was a repost.
It was once again unsurprising that further simplifications in books, magazines and online can lead to erroneous results. That's why I like to create mostly puzzle out of contemporary literature. If it's anyway possible..

THANKS to all of you, for your great interest and input with this puzzle

Did you know that Auto-Union also built trailers in the post-war period?
