Appears to me to be a late 1920s Stutz chassis, but I haven't found the coachbuilder yet. Your comment "partly" American points me to some European firm?  Am I even on the right track?

Yes, it is a Stutz. Locked for you to find the European coachbuilder.

Well, it certainly doesn't look French, or even Italian . . . so I will first guess, British?

Is it a well-known German coachbuilder, or one of those that only did a car or two?  Not that it makes a lot of difference - to me, the research is always the best and most enjoyable part of the search!

I am sorry, my memory played a trick on me. It is not a German, but a Swiss coachbuilder. It is not one of those that come to mind immediately, but they bodied several cars.

Hmmmm, a Swiss-bodied late 1920s Stutz. One would think such a distinctive car would not be that difficult to find a trace of.

One would be wrong.

So far I have searched the "usual suspects" for known Swiss coachbuilders - Graber, Gangloff, Worblaufen, even Beutler . . . nothing. You state that they bodied "several cars", so surely SOMETHING must be out there. All of the coachbuilder web sites have been no help, nor have the Stutz references I have found so far shown this car. Oh, well - as I said, the research is half of the fun so I'll keep looking. One question that may or may not help - did the builder make anything besides cars?

You are right, automotive coachbuilding was not their main business.

OK, now we're getting somewhere.

I just wish I knew where.

Still looking. I have a couple of ideas . . .  Ah, Switzerland. As Orson Welles said in The Third Man: "In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace – and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock."  Hopefully I can uncover whatever else the maker of this fine Stutz produced besides a few motorcars.

Hmmm.  Not what I found for it. I found it listed as by Garage Schlotter in Zurich, primarily a builder of busses. The same picture of the car is on the web site, which is for the WAGI Museum. The caption on the photo reads (in German): "The Garage Schlotter near Zurich ordered on behalf of Mr. Baron von Mosch from Germany resident in Zug, a  "convertible carosserie 2/4-seat on Stutz chassis with 8-Cylinder engine". Is it possible that the "Garage Schlotter" merely ordered the car, and it was built by SWS? I couldn't find anything else actually built by Schlotter, which is why I hadn't gotten back to you yet.
