This is the 1953 Damilla Special, built by Californian Ron Lawless (and named after his wife). It has a Datsun 240Z straight six for power, and is modeled to resemble the racing Maseratis and Aston Martins of the 1950s - which it does pretty well. I had remembered seeing it for sale in Hemmings Motor News and a few other places. Quite a car, and one I wouldn't mind owning.

Although named by Lawless "1953 Damilla Special", the car was obviously built much later, sometime in the mid-1990s.

I think you're correct that it wasn't built until the mid to late 1990s - but it is in fact titled in California as a 1953. Not sure how Lawless managed that, but he did. Maybe had a few chassis parts and/or a serial number plate from a 1953 something-or-other? In any case, it's a neat car.
