It's not Indianapolis, and the precise date the car was built is not known to me, but would probably be in the mid-1930s.

It looks like a Miller with a nose job. Is it a modified car or a completely new car?

It's a one-off built from parts which, at the time, were not new.

This one is proving difficult to find. Would knowing the engine help? Is it an Offenhauser? Is any part of it from a Miller?

It would help if you knew the engine, but of course you'll have to work it out! No Miller or Offy connection.

Yes. It's the ubiquitous flathead.

I do know the circuit but I doubt it would help. It wasn't a permanent track. The photo was taken in the USA.

I have found several photos and extensive video footage of this car in action, but I don't have a name for it yet other than "Ford V8 Special." It appears to have been driven by Lemuel Ladd in at least one event; but was he also the builder?

Found it: "Old Grey Mare" shown at the 1937 Alexandria Bay Road Race (as driven by Lemuel Ladd).

You've found it! Quite a well-known car in its day, and later images show it had a different appearance, but this is the car as first built.

However Ladd didn't build the car. LOCKED for gte4289 to finish the puzzle.

It was originally raced by John C. Reuter in 1935, so it seems Reuter may have actually been the builder?

Also, in addition to the "Old Grey Mare," it has also been known as "Old Glory" and more recently as the "1935 Ford Reuter V8 Special."
