Obviously, at least to those of us who were around at the time, it's a mid 1950s Ford ten special.

Same here.
I assumed the Reg. No. had not been obscured because it was no longer valid, but just in case I tried it and it is on a Howard Special of 1172cc first registered in May 1956 - and it's green!

Between the two of you you've got the right answer.
I didn't know it was called the Howard Special (I never checked the registration but I should have since it's not an old photo!).   What I wanted to know was who built the body and tobytwirl has answered that - it was built by Bonglass Industries before they sold the moulds to Rochdale for their ST in 1955 (the first ST body appeared in 1956).
I'll give you a point each since you Allan have found a name for it and you tobytwirl have given me the answer I was looking for!
