I'd forgotten about this one.  How about this:

"Ralph DePalma drove a strictly stock 1924 Chrysler a full thousand miles while averaging 68.33 MPH in an elapsed time of 1,007 minutes and 54 seconds - actual underway time was 878 minutes, 10.8 seconds - done at Fresno, California on 17 September 1924 under American Automobile Association official supervision."

Wrong country, and the covered distance was much more than 1000 miles and took more than 24 hours.

To be precise, it was driven 86,439.1 km from September 25th to December 3rd, 1929 without turning the engine off, but I'll accept your answer.  ;D
So, after almost four years, I'm happy to call this solved and to award you two points.  :applause:

I wonder.  Did they use the same oil for all 86000 km?  Did they change the oil while running?  Perhaps they used a dry-sump oiling system.

Possibly they just kept topping the oil up as it blew past the rings and burned away.
