What was this car called, who was the driver, and what was the car originally?

It's only very slightly altered from its original appearance. The exhaust could be a clue.

Well the exhaust is in the style of the 1911 Coupe de l'Auto Delage as seen in the hands of Sir John Briscoe. I still can't find this car though so I can stay below 400 points for a bit!

You spotted that huge clue, Allan. It is indeed one of the 1911 Delage team cars, mildly modified. In this photo it is shown at a well-known racing site, and had a nickname, which was not uncommon at the time.

LOCKED for you - name of driver and nickname of car for one point.

Seems to have been Tommy Hann who drove it and for some reason he called it "Handy Andy".
The only other photos of Tommy Hann I can find are driving an HE.

One of the cars in more or less original state, with mudguards for road use.
