What is this car, and who designed and built it?

Time for some help. The man who built this car went on to design an iconic car for a well-known maker.

Not him, but you're getting closer. If you can find the name of the man, you can find out what the car is.

When I said he designed a well-known car, it was just the body. The chassis was designed by a very famous man.

It's a Lotus Six chassis with a body designed by Peter Kirwan-Taylor. The body was built by Williams and Pritchard in 1954

Yes! Well done - you were very persistent.

Peter Kirwan-Taylor designed this body for his own Lotus 6, and his talent was spotted by Colin Chapman who invited him to come up with a proposal for the new Lotus road car, the Elite. The result was one of the prettiest cars of all time IMHO. How much Chapman paid him I don't know, but doubtless CC got away with as little as possible.

I'm surprised this hasn't been on AP before.

I've found this photo (very small) of the car being raced in period.

Hard luck!  I know that at least one of you two guys agrees with me that clues are a legitimate tool, and that the puzzle-setter has jurisdiction over how his puzzle progresses up the sections. It was a puzzle that really didn't merit the scramble from the Pros which would have resulted. I'm just surprised that only one Expert had any real attempt at it.

This seems to only have been solved as part of a group puzzle before. So what is it (for 1 point)?
