Hey, I can answer this now that I can compete on the Experts board again.
It's the Vernet-Pairard R166 Renault for the 1958 Le Mans 24 hours.

It's the Vernet-Pairard R166 Renault for the 1958 Le Mans 24 hours.

It carries the correct race number, but the 1958 car was an open spyder. There are a lot of similarities however, and this looks like someone has tried to modernise the car.

I must say I thought the '1958' must have been a mistake at first as it looks way more modern than that.
But whatever I Googled for that description this and another picture of the same car came up...
I had actually downloaded the picture some months ago to use as a puzzle myself!

The puzzle car was designed by Paolo Vallorz and the famous artist Jean Tinguely.

One thought has occurred to me - after 1958 the builder decided that the car was no longer competitive, although it was entered for the 1959 race, and the entry was declined by the ACO.  It had raced in various forms since 1953.

In 1960 the ACO introduced new regulations for prototype cars, trying to bring them more in line with the production GT cars, and one of the new rules was that the windscreen had to be a minimum height. I wonder whether the car was redesigned with the possibility of an entry in the 1960 race?
