It was indeed built in the style of European F3 cars of the time, but it's not a JAP engine.

Not that either! I must say that the engine looks much larger in my puzzle photo - I'm going by the caption and records of the time and I think it must be an optical illusion. So it's an F3 style engine but not JAP or Norton.

No. Sorry if some of my answers have not been very well worded. It was not normally a car engine.
