I know this, but obviously cannot remember what it is... The only thing I can propose right now is: French coachbuilder on a British chassis, around 1948?

It is a British chassis, yes, and it was from 1948.
Not a French coachbuilder, but there is  French connection to the answer.

Some corrections
- In 1946 Coachcraft Ltd was bought by University Motors and the name was changed to University Coachwork Ltd so this car is built by University Coachwork
- It was built in steel on 401 chassis 211 so it is not a 400

Ok, I agree.
I took it from the Coachcraft section of a well-known coachbuilding site so never thought about the name.
It's they who described it as a 400 with no mention of 401; sometimes all Bristols that begin with 40* are referred to as 400 series, but I can change it to be more specific..
