Looks as if it might be an Australian MG-based special.

It's not Australian though and it's not MG-powered as far as I have been able to ascertain..

Staying in the same part of the world, is it a New Zealand built Ford-based special?

No, it's neither Ford-engined nor from New Zealand..

Rhodesia?

 :shakehead:

My guess was because it looked a bit like a Consul-engined car that raced in Southern Rhodesia back in the 60s.

The photo looks period, and the car has a roll bar, which was not common in the UK at that time. It looks like it's an offset single-seater, with steering on the right, but we've covered most Commonwealth countries. Is it British??

The photo is in period, yes, but the car wasn't built in the UK nor is it seen racing in the UK.

Let's ask if it was made and raced in a Commonwealth country?
We've covered many of them but there are some others.

I'm guessing Formula Junior, and a homebuilt car.

There were lots of DKW engined cars, but this can't be right.  Tony Polivka in his Peugeot special?

Cancel that - I've just found out that this car was in fact nothing more than an Intermeccanica which he re-named.

Is it actually (much to my consternation) DKW-engined?

It is a Formula Junior car, yes, but not DKW-engined.
(Nor, as you say, anything to do with Tony Polivka or Peugeot).

I think that could be a Standard 10 engine (Triumph in Canada). Is it Bob Sayle in his homebuilt Special - Westwood 1960?

Yes, that's exactly who and what it is!

Well dug out.

It took me a long time! I had to go through all records for that era (1959-1962) and look for something that was not obviously Ford/BMC/DKW engined.  I don't know where you found that photo- and clearly you're not going to tell me!- because I took a complete guess. There was another Triumph-engined car but I found a photo of that, and it was not the culprit. The carbs and exhaust on the same side told me that my previous guesses had been completely wrong. The Sayle car actually achieved some top-6 finishes which is quite surprising since that engine design goes back to pre-WW2.

PS I think the car was originally built to comply with exisitng regulations for what was known as "Canada Class" racing - I don't know the specific details, but when Formula Junior came along this class was accepted as entries. I know there was a sports-racing class also known as Canada Class and this too was for smaller-engined cars, probably production-based.
