ER 88-30 at the license plate. That car (Sathe??) was spotted with a Martare GT.

No wonder you remembered it!
As far as I know that's not what it was/is called, though I don't have an alternative name for it.
But it doesn't have any VW bits that I'm aware of, so I think that name is unlikely.

One question has been answered then, the registration number (which is shown in the thread to which you gave the link) so what remains is:
who built it and what powers it?

Yes, you've got the registration number.
Someone on that thread spotted that name and guessed the car was a Sethera, but it isn't.
As mentioned, I don't have an actual name for it, just that I think it very unlikely it's called "VW Buggy".

That's right (though I wrote it down as Tom Worrell, which may or may not be right!)
It did have a Porsche 914 engine at one time, as well as another one, but it doesn't have one now.

That was one of them yes, but there's another one as well and I'm not sure which one it actually has now..
It might be the Audi or it might be the other.. what?

That's right, yes.
When I found the first picture it was described as Vauxhall-engined then I saw it had also had a Porsche 914 and Audi engine at different stages of its life.  Who on earth would change either a Porsche or an Audi engine for a Vauxhall engine though and why, so maybe it's the Vauxhall engine that got changed..

Anyway, that sorts out all the answers so the puzzle is solved.  Well done.
