I really should have asked some questions first.

Was this car built for racing, or is it a speedster-style car built for road use?

PEUGEOT Type 39 of 1902

luisps takes it! That's what it is. The Type 39 was the first Peugeot to use an engine developed in-house by Peugeot (previous models used Daimler-derived engines). It has four cylinders, 2042 cc and produces 10 HP. About 100 were produced, apparently making it a success for the time. This unit is at the Shanghai Auto Museum. I don't know if any other examples survive, since a Google search for "Peugeot Type 39" only seems to produce images of this same one from Shanghai.

In Google there is a picture of this car on a French website of a "brocanter" with many pictures of cars ordered by decades and although the picture is a front view the louvres inthe engine hood are unmistakable

Interesting but Peugeot certainly used their own design of engine in the smaller cars, such as this Type 26 of 1899:

It has a two-cylinder engine with the exhaust valves operated by a system of levers from a scroll on the outside of the flywheel.

My copy of Georgano claims that Peugeot introduced their own engine designs from 1896 onwards. They terminated their contract with Daimler to produce the latter's engines under licence.

Thanks for the info Allan L and nicanary. I trusted some internet sources that were clearly not up to scratch. It now seems clear that this was Peugeot's first 4-cylinder, but not first propietary engine.

Yes the internet is full of traps for the unwary!
So are some books, of course, and they can't be changed but internet items can be, if the originator can be found and contacted - and Wikipedia can be edited directly, although there can then be a edit/re-edit battle.
Keep up the good work Monty!

ETA: Peugeot Type Numbers were not used at the time but appeared when someone compiled a book about their cars in more recent times.
