Could there be an Austin Healey Sprite lurking beneath the Cunningham-esque bodywork?

Indeed; and I thought this was a quite unknown car and would be a hard puzzle... Shows what I know...!
The car originally had a 1.5 litre MG engine as well but this was replaced by a 2.4 litre Jaguar engine, hence its moniker.
Well done.

Frightening idea - I'd guess the 2.4 Jaguar motor weighs over twice as much as the original XPAG, albeit with over twice the power (112 b.h.p. plays 54!).
1950 must be the TD's date as Jaguar didn't make the 2.4 litre version of the XK until 1956.
Or was it actually a 2½ litre (pushrod) Jaguar motor from much earlier?
Opinionated but sometimes wrong

Yes, in 1950 the car was an MG Special with MG chassis and engine.
You may well be right about that Jaguar engine though; I was just assuming it was the 2.4 but I think the blurb did actually mention a two and half litre Jaguar engine..
Well spotted!
