If there's no information about this online, then I'll never be able to solve it, but one thing that strikes me is that I can't see any driveshafts to the front wheels. So is the engine/transaxle unit mounted at the back driving the rear wheels?

No, it's front engined and front-wheel-drive. The internet is not the only source of good data you know. Books and magazines work equally well, if not better, as well!

I'm well aware of that, and there's a lot of misinformation on the web. My comment was prompted by the fact that I have very few books at home, and no magazines, so that places me at something of a disadvantage. $:-\$

As a special celebration to mark the 10th anniversary of AutoPuzzles, I will give a clue to the answer for my oldest remaining puzzle, which has now been sitting here unresolved for more than seven years!

So, the name of the maker of this Spanish 2CV-based buggy has two names, both of which are indirectly linked to cars.
