PM sent, as you may have the year of this as 1948, which I believe to be inaccurate.  My PM will explain why.

It would be interesting to know what "Benjamin" this was supposed to be. Production of the French car ceased in 1931, and they didn't build any model which looked like this - in addition, the modern fashion for creating replicas didn't start till later in the 20th century.

I wonder if the builders were just trying to create an attractive roadster in 1930-style, and decided that Benjamin was a good name for it. Does anyone know the power unit?

I have a strong suspicion that this car was built within the last few years, but possibly using a 1948 vehicle is its base (unknown to me).  Rotor Cars in Argentina began building Benjamin replicas around 2004 onwards, and I believe they still exist today, and offer this model.

Yes, I agree with the probable build date. It wouldn't have been a Benjamin if it's 1948. I was just thinking about the style of the car - this is a previous puzzle, and much more like a "period" Benjamin.

Through a very strange coincidence, yesterday at the Beaulieu autojumble I was introduced to Rodolfo Iriate, the gentlemen that founded Rotors Cars, and built this Benjamin.  He is currently in England for the that event, plus the Goodwood Revival later this week.

He confirmed that he has built around 30 Benjamin replicas to date at his workshop, based just north of Buenos Aires.  He uses the Argentine-built Siam Di Tella (a 1960s BMC Farina, made in Argentina in the '60s in Riley and MG versions) as the unlikely mechanical base for this car.  He built his first Benjamin in the late 1990s, and the replica is still available to order today, along with amazingly accurate replicas of pre-war Delage and Delahayes, plus the Rotor Cars aluminium Jaguar C-type and Lotus Eleven replicas.

He knew about the '1948' car pictured in this puzzle, but confirmed that the 1948 date was incorrect, as it is one of his Rotor Cars Benjamin 1500 replicas, that he built around 2004, so perhaps the heading can be update please to remove the 1948 date, and mention Rotor Cars Benjamin 1500.  Thanks  ;).

Mr Iritate was a very pleasant, friendly man, aged about 80, and he now runs Rotor Cars with his son, who looks after the business on a day-to-day basis.
A car is for life, not just for Christmas.

Thanks Mekubb.  It was good to be able to find out more about this interesting car from the man that actually created it, especially as the Siam Di Tella was the last car on earth i would have thought of to use as a base!
