Is this a coachbuilt 501? If so, is the coachbuilder German?

Yes  ;)

Sorry, I am lost here! :)

I thought a coupe and a sedan were different, unless BMW used both names for the same type of body?

Sorry, it seems my joke didn't work. Pick one of the body types and you'll get an earnest answer.

It is designed by Ghia-Aigle and called BMW 505 Pullman Limousine.
P.S. It was Michelotti who designed it for Ghia-Aigle. It was BMW's weapon to fight the Mercedes Adenauer

No, it is not the BMW 505 by Ghia-Aigle. (That one is on my list of future puzzles.  ;) )

Your're right. It is just BMW 505 from 1955.
It is also designed by Michelotti and is sometimes called staatslimousine.
Michelotti called it "505 Ministeriale"
Some sources say it is also designed for Ghia-Aigle..

The front of this car is very similar to production BMW 502's.

Some right bits of information in your post. It is not in any way a BMW 505 and it is not from 1955. It served the same purpose as the 505 was intended to do. It is called BMW ____ Staatslimousine. Locked for you to find the missing part of the name. Although I didn't ask for it initially, a year would be fine, too.

Locked for you.
