For 1 point, tell me the name of the car, what it was based on, and who the builder was.

Well the front suspension (or the left at least) looks Lancia to me.
I presume it's a 500cc F3 car of the 1950s, in Australia.
Opinionated but sometimes wrong

That's enough information to LOCK it for you. It's based on a Lancia, and is in Australia. But, it wasn't raced in F3, and is bigger than 500cc.

Found it!!!
It was Eddie Perkins' Perkins Special built in 1950 around Lancia engine, transmission and suspension parts on a bespoke chassis so it could be rear engine.
It was rebuilt, after some racing derangements, by John Hickford who changed the engine to an Austin engine in Healey 100 spec and renamed it  ‘Lancia Austin Special’. One of Hickfords other changes, which we can see in the photo, was to replace the Lancia transverse leaf spring at the rear with "coil-over-shocks" so although the engine isn't visible it must be Hickford's version of the car.

All this assumes the article from JUST Cars of 07/09/2012 is correct of course.

Yep, that's all correct. I've seen it described as the Perkins Special, the Lancia Special and the Lancia Austin Special. I'd have accepted any of those.

A replica was recently built by John Hickford, using a 1929 Lambda engine. I've seen it at hillclimbs, and it's quick.

What's this car called now, what was it called originally, when was it built, by whom and powered by what - all for 1 point!

Is this an obscure home-built racer from Rhodesia, or some part of Southern Africa?

You're right.
I'm travelling away from home at the moment so will deal with this one on my return on Wednesday.

As said your are right so have your point.
Apparently it was originally known as the Perkins Special, for obvious reasons!

I was waiting for that one !

The Austin engine which replaced the ancient Lancia unit was a 4-cylinder motor which was upgraded to Healey 100S spec, so presumably was a 2.6-litre from something like a Westminster. Must have been an interesting power/weight ratio.

Didn't the Westminster always have a 2.6 litre 6-cyl engine, whilst the Healey 100/4 had a 2.6 litre 4-cyl which must have been the engine used? The Healey 100/6 then used the 6-cylinder Westminster engine until it became the 3000.  I'm no Austin-Healey expert bit I think my memory is right there?!

The four-cylinder 2.6 litre engine of the A-H 100 was previously used in the A90 - part of that car's lack of appeal was its lack of power, something that was sorted out by Donald Healey.

I had this one as a puzzle a couple of years ago. I had Perkins spelt Perkin's (apostrophe in the wrong spot), which is why it probably didn't show up as a previous puzzle.

Apparently, after the replica was completed a couple of years ago, the original chassis came to light.
