I'm looking at that enormous wheelbase, those familiar-looking wheels and that windscreen and I'm thinking: Somebody's idea of a slightly lumpen coupe on an Austin/Morris 1800 base? ???

Converted from a 1964 Triumph 2000 Saloon, chassis no MB3824DL, in 1965 by Michelotti into convertible Stag prototype ,finished in Lilac/pink. Later used for development of Stag hardtop and roll over bar. Converted to this fastback in autumn 1968 ?

Thanks for the multitude of answers!
The point goes to shamrock though because it is indeed the 3-door Stag GT proposal from 1965.
Many thanks for the extra info though 72must; very interesting.
Sorry Richard - even BL didn't think they could make a silk purse out of the sow's ear that was the 1800 landcrab though...!

The Landcrab had great potential. It had a good chassis, a reliable engine and massive interior space. But it did need a good stylist to bring out its best. The rejected excellent Pininfarina design (later possibly nicked by Citroen for its GS series ???) could have made all the difference. I think the stubborn and single-minded Issigonis has a lot of missed Austin/Morris 1800 sales to answer for. :D
