A further mini-search suggests that the venue might be Watkins Glen, 1960 where it apparentkly ran No 22.  As it was a 'Libre' car with Chev power - and no gearbox as such if memory serves - it can't have been the US GP.....

Correct. I asked for the event as part of the puzzle because it was such an unusual race. The organisers allowed any type of car because F1 cars were in short supply in the US. Bill Sadler built this car just for this event, but the engine blew, as per the photo.

Another well-solved puzzle.
